NEW: The DOGE operative who gutted USAID -- firing thousands of employees and canceling lifesaving programs -- never actually signed the paperwork that's legally required for him to be employed by the agency.

wired.comA 28-Year-Old DOGE Operative Gutted USAID. HR Had No Record of Him Working ThereDespite the agency's human resources department saying he hadn’t even been onboarded, Jeremy Lewin oversaw the destruction of USAID. It’s not clear he had the legal authority to do so.

[March 12th, 1981] Portland police officers dumped dead possums in front of the Burger Barn, a popular Black-owned restaurant. This racially motivated act sparked intense civil rights protests, significant political fallout, and lasting community outrage in Portland, Oregon.

There is an international, well-connected network of fascists promoting far-right candidates in elections (and coups) across the world. The guy who owns the site Yglesias posted this on is one of their leaders. Be careful of people advocating for their opponents to disarm!

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

The word “righsizing” is a bit of opaque corporate jargon that sounds more reasonable than downsizing. That PPS is using it as a euphemism for school closures is a useful signal to how they see this proposal.

I really don’t understand people who quit X but stay on Fab or Instagram. Zuckerberg is evil on purpose. Much more mild mannered than Musk but they are allies.

Remember that anything that happens in “some foreign country” can happen here, too. If the last 10 years haven’t taught you that you haven’t been paying attention.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

The instant success of Wildwood, the biggest Portland movie maybe ever, is bringing tears to my eyes. Ive always loved stop motion, I have friends who worked on this wondrous project and I’m a proud Portlander. This must be what sports fans feel when their team wins.

I am a government employee. The big boss where I work said they didn’t include tote bags or t shirts at the annual employee conference this year because new rules mean they’re considered part of our compensation and taxable.

I just can't stress enough that it's not a coincidence, and it's not even just a personality type. It is an active agenda and an ideological imperative. The physical and sexual abuse of women and children is as much a plank in the right's platform as tax cuts for billionaires. They work hard at it.

Even though Kotek supported defunding PfA, expanding I-5, cutting transportation funding, and rolling over for a billionaire, I am not going to vote for Drazan. I can praise her for backing some yimby ideas, though.

Dundon's approval in Portland was 5%, with a margin of error of 4%. That's an astounding achievement in being unlikable. www.blazersedge.com/trail-blazer...

As a D2 constituent I REALLY want to see what Ryan and Owendorff (and related a-holes) have been messaging each other.

Councilor Candace Avalos@counciloravalos.bsky.social

I will not tolerate this abhorrent behavior. I immediately cut him off and removed him from Council Chambers. There must be consequences for repeated violations of decorum. Allowing hateful rhetoric to go unchecked silences the very communities being targeted. Period.

Last week, JWJ co-sponsored the Friends of Preschool for All County candidate forum. JWJ was a chief petitioner on this popular measure to provide free, inclusive, culturally responsive, and universal preschool programs in Multnomah County. Here's what candidates for Multnomah County Chair said:

But you all will continue to use Instagram and Facebook, won’t you?

Senator Chris Van Hollen@vanhollen.senate.gov

Unacceptable. Meta took down the No Kings Instagram today and kept it offline for well over an hour. Censoring free speech to appease Donald Trump? We the people deserve answers, but regardless, we will not be silenced.

The part of the election runup where every day brings videos of Trump getting up in front of some battleground audience in his dumb hat and going "frankly you're terrible people, really disgusting. A bunch of stupid people and their awful kids. [long break for laughter and applause] Ugly as shit,"

The more astute among us (who just overall have better vibes as people)see through the portlandwashing of regressive agendas

According to donor data on Orestar, Kellie Torres’ donors overlap most with Rene Gonzalez and Dan Ryan. She’s running as a progressive in all her mailers. Just something to consider!

Why are food cart prices basically the same as dine-in restaurants? My assumption that the rent and labor costs are lower must be wrong. I would think the initial opening investment is less with a cart as well.

I wish they actually built a huge circular wall and gate around Rose City Park.

An April 1909 advertisement for Rose City Park, highlighting the building restrictions that would ensure no "shanties, shacks, saloons, slums or aught that will be unsightly or objectionable." Restrictions like these paved the way for later racially exclusive covenants in places like Laurelhurst.

What can I say to my spouse who won’t « let » me ride a bike because she is worried it’s too dangerous? My doctor recommended I use one for commuting as a way to maintain a healthier weight.

Let’s Imagine a situation where street parking of bikes was causing the deaths of people in cars. How fast would the bike parking be removed?

Brandon Mullen@brandonmullen.com

Portland needs to get its shit together and daylight every intersection. If the City won't do it, we need to. If we are serious about Vision Zero, we need to de-prioritize car storage and prioritize our own lives. www.oregonlive.com/commuting/20...

You know, the thing is, I had drafted this piece a month ago, and then never published it, because I thought maybe it was too mean.

If you drive the speed limit on any arterial road, drivers behind you will take it as a personal insult.

Whoopsie, so now instead of the problematic claim of his husband trading in his phone, he has dubiously discovered it actually never got sent in the mail. Nobody believes you Dan.

Portland Mercury@portlandmercury.com

A Multnomah County judge ordered Councilor Dan Ryan to preserve evidence on his personal phone until an ongoing public records lawsuit is resolved. “This is not a game of cat and mouse," Judge David Rees said. "There are some indications that those games are being played, and it has to stop today."

I hate to admit that i used to work in political consulting but tobias was one of our biggest clients when I worked in fundraising. given that he spent like 70% of his time bashing bernie supporters and bragging about knowing sheryl sandberg, I guarantee that this is partially ideological for him

Kevin Foster@kevinhfoster.bsky.social

OR Secretary of State Tobias Read has now refused to investigate nine election complaints in cases that are damaging to DSA candidates. Noemi Legaspi lied in the voter pamphlet about her opponent Lesly Muñoz hiring a convicted felon. Insane. Then there’s Chief Day’s statements about Mitch Green:

WTF?! I love Vancouver now.

Jennifer@jenwith1n.bsky.social

Vancouver, WA did the biggest upzone / deregulation possibly in the entire nation and not enough people are talking about it. And this all came from City staff - they didn’t have community advocates demanding this for years!

If PPS follows through on either proposal, my kid will go to Cleary next year, which seems like a benefit. The Irvington school is listed on the national register of historic places; how does that limit possibilities for that site?

The 9000 sampled Oregonians (40% not from PDX) thought transit should be 19% of OR’s transpo budget. From 2023-2025, the legislature proposed 8% of budget to to transit; the governor cut that to 7%.

OPB@opb.org

Oregonians ranked maintaining and preserving highways and bridges and improving safety as the top priorities they think the Oregon Department of Transportation should focus on as it looks to resolve a $200 million budget gap in the 2027-29 budget cycle.
