The Mamdani Difference isn't that he's secretly moderate, it's that as a mayor he's accepted the responsibility of governing — setting priorities, making tradeoffs, worrying whether ideas work — while leftist members of congress can just post takes.

West Seattle getting social housing and a new tiny-home village on the same day! Love that our neighborhood is contributing towards a more affordable city. westseattleblog.com/2026/10/new-...

We caught up with @mayor.seattle.gov and SDOT Acting Director Angela Brady on 2nd Ave in downtown Seattle.
JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks.
A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it

The American right wing is anti-city (anti-bike, anti-transit, anti-density, etc) because their power relies on their base hating and distrusting anyone not exactly like them, and as @mayor.seattle.gov said “Cities are where people who are different from one another learn how to live together.”
Local architect/historic board member perfectly articulates the raison d’etre of historic preservation boards:
“What I've heard is that this has been scaled and designed to work with economics and making finances work. So as it stands, I have a lot of trouble supporting the project moving forward…”
Not just the fastest, or the cheapest, or the best, but the *only* possible solution to climate change is a rapid global buildout of clean energy infrastructure. If you're standing in the way of that, you're not working on climate change & should be honest with yourself about your priorities.
The Urbanist versus The Stranger: How their 2026 MLKC area general election endorsements compare
The two publications largely agree where their endorsements overlap, but they are split on key legislative contests in the 32nd and 43rd districts. Our side-by-side comparison shows where their…
Hey! If you learned from my 93-post-and-growing thread on a proposal to ban RVs in Seattle, which I've been posting from City Hall all afternoon, please support my work with a donation or subscription to PublICola, where I post long-form coverage of the city every day. publicola.com/support/
The first comment at today's public hearing and vote on Dan Strauss' plan to ban RVs in Seattle, restricting them to two-hour parking, is from someone who owns an RV he and his wife travel in. He wants an exemption for RVs parked on the street at the residence where they're registered.
With all the drama going on, I'm just wondering if @leftycheatsheet.bsky.social would have endorsed Claudia Balducci or fallen for Girmay Zahilay's progressive bait and switch. Either way, I'm sticking with @theurbanist.org as my most trusted source.
"I'm not seeing any indication from the Executive branch that they want to talk about the funding for Metro now," CM Claudia Balducci today, on the agency's projected fiscal cliff in the early 2030s.
"We're spending a lot of money, but we're not talking about how to prop up the funding."
I'm on @kuow.org's Seattle Now podcast today, talking about how the Seattle City Council is responding to Mayor Katie Wilson's balanced, no-taxes budget. Come for the wonk shit, stay for the spicy analysis!
Older people who want to pay lower property taxes should be able to downsize into an age-appropriate home that requires less upkeep without having to leave the communities where they raised their families; but they oppose that because they feel entitled to a fixed, unchanging neighborhood character.
If you're 79, living in a mansion, presumably kids have left, and think your taxes are too high, you should probably downsize. I just don't look at an octogenarian standing in front of a 5 bedroom and think "poor him"
Every Republican president since Reagan has tanked the economy, increased the deficit and started a costly war in the Middle East.
When people say Republicans are good for the economy, what they really mean is Republicans lower taxes on the rich.
The “every accusation is a confession” thing is maybe overstated but when it comes to Republicans and “sharia” it is unquestionably the case that the people trying to impose their religion on others through the legal system in the US are not Muslims bsky.app/profile/qasi...

Zero questions about Tommy declaring he wants the Bible to supersede the Constitution.

NEW: ICE is trying to deport a mother of 4 while her husband is at Fort Benning in Army basic training. When she went to pick up the family's military IDs, Navy personnel turned her over to ICE. She's been in the US since age six. With @nancyayoussef.bsky.socialwww.theatlantic.com/politics/202...
The Social Housing Developer board tonight also voted to approve a project pipeline that includes six new construction sites and four acquisitions through the end of 2027, contingent on the issuance of bonds.
MAJOR NEWS: The Seattle Social Housing Developer is announcing its first new construction project, in the Central District at 2402 E Yesler Way. The SSHD board is set to vote on property acquisition momentarily.
Construction is set to start next year and wrap in 2028.
There is no way this happens in this form without electing Katie Wilson, and no matter what else happens, it was worth it for this.
This is almost the most meaningful thing we can do as a city for the climate.
This, by the way, is why having local reporters who stick around to keep covering the city year after year matters! I literally just got it in my head that Saka was gung-ho about these restrooms last year and just HAD to take the time to look it up. Support your petty local journalist!
I thought I remembered Rob Saka SUPPORTING the exact kind of prefab restrooms that he called a waste of money today (now that Mayor Wilson is proposing them) just last year. And lo, I found his amendment—he added $1 million for graffiti-resistant, prefabricated restrooms in West Seattle (p.14)!
Council Critics Accuse Wilson of Creating "the Unfund Budget"
“How many new bathrooms are proposed for expansion? Now we want to expand, create new shiny things, when we can’t even properly take care of the things we have today?”
One thing I have noticed about the 2023 councilmembers is they use these policy discussions to rant at central staff and the 2025 councilmembers use them to ask policy questions.
Billions of dollars’ worth of contracts predicting oil would fall and the S&P 500 would rise were placed about 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a post on Truth Social. CFTC staff began to investigate...then were told to lay off. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
“The modules sit right on top of the ground so the one I rode went in with no digging in just two and a half days”
@ryancalkins.bsky.social@portofseattle.bsky.social can we get this between the light rail and airport??
The right wing crash out over asian students celebrating at a UT football game reveals that all along the true goal of reactionary colorblindness was never “meritocracy” but resegregation. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
Unless somebody kept the receipt and Kiewit has a really good return policy, imho the time for dunking on Pinehurst Station has passed.
It's built, now we upzone the heck out of the area & take a bulldozer to the fence around the soon-to-be-former golf course so the rest of us get to use the spot.
Why did NC, SD & NE perform so much better reducing emissions than CA, WA & CT? Because they are less likely to build highways they can’t afford to maintain. In other words, fiscal responsibility might be better for the climate than a climate champion.

I think people should listen to what the administration trying to bring back spectacle lynchings, race riots, and middle passage-esque deportation voyages are trying to tell you about themselves. bsky.app/profile/bren...
The news just since I left work:
-A planned livestream of an execution by firing squad
-Trump basically trying to incite a pogrom against Somalis
Nothing mysterious or complicated about what's happening.
Who is the government holding in its shelters for “unaccompanied” immigrant children?
Turns out, a growing number of these kids were taken away from loving parents and other relatives.
One of the worst parts about living in a city is the dichotomy of "quality of life" laws.
Busy bodies misuse poorly written code to shut down nice things that improve quality of life
Police refuse to enforce the laws against public space mal use (eg drag racing) that actually hurt quality of life.
the pettiness of homeowners who just can't abide people enjoying outdoor spaces in "their" neighborhoods knows no bounds
the need for a "solution" to outdoor dining only exists if you concede that outdoor dining is inherently a bad thing

A year ago, @propublica.org told you immigration agents had detained more than 170 U.S. citizens.
We’ve updated our count, and we’ve got all the receipts.
The tally: At least 506 citizens detained. Sometimes held at gunpoint, handcuffed, or even deported.

Arguably the biggest democracy referendum next month:
Virginia is one of only three states where the state constitution says people should lose their right to vote FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE if they are convicted of any felony.
This measure would allow anyone to vote after prison.
We're looking for the next host of City Cast Seattle! Journalists, content creators, and any other curious locals are encouraged to apply: apply.workable.com/city-cast/j/...
No, Sound Transit is not still facing a $35 billion budget shortfall, Seattle Times Editorial Board. We had a whole contentious process to tackle that earlier this year, maybe you weren't paying attention?
Seattle Times editorial board complains about $30,000 bonus for Sound Transit head, but apparently had no problem with $50,000 bonuses for three Seattle police command staff (Barnes, Sayles, and Powell), all of them just thank-yous for taking top jobs here.
Can you imagine if someone "accidentally" overpaid SPS teachers $13 million?
The Times would be demanding long prison sentences. Every teacher who cashed their paycheck would be dragged before a committee. The entire school board would have to resign.
No bottom to how bad SPD can be at their job.
The Department of Homeland Security is celebrating that for the first time in ~50 years, more people left America than moved here.
These people are so stupid and so racist they don’t realize they are scoring own goals
Historic neighborhoods with iron preservation mandates don't stop change. They accelerate change. Historic preservation turns units for renters into mansions for billionaires

NEW: DHS agents tracked people observing ICE arrests, photographed them, ran their plates, pulled personal information, and added them to a Palantir database, according to newly unsealed court filings.

The number of original, breaking, and investigative stories I publish, as a one-person newsroom with occasional freelancers, consistently dwarfs the output of the multiple full-time reporters the Times has on my beat. Outlets like ours need support, not legacy newspaper campaigns against us.
States should stop branding their Medicaid programs with cute names like "Apple Health" and just plain call it "Medicaid" so that their citizens have a clear idea of who is to credit or blame for their access to coverage.
