Hello, network, I'm looking for an adjunct to teach our interactive visualization class next semester (virtually). If you are based in the United States—unfortunately we can't hire people from other countries—design visualizations with JS+D3, etc. and are interested in teaching, send me a message.

I’m thrilled to announce three new professorships in compressed air thruster ethics, compressed air thruster policy, and social impact of compressed air thrusters. we are also headhunting a Vice Provost of Thrust

Listening to the awesome #ccfest today and realizing that much of my thinking about how to innovate and move forward is poured into internal documents and grant proposals these days. As a director I share the ideas with other admins but not enough beyond that.

I appreciate that the New York Times and YouTube add a quiz to their podcast commercials for Premium. Everytime a person says their name and I don’t know it, it confirms that I am not the target audience for YouTube Premium.

There is no conceivable reason a person anywhere should make or have their worth increase more rhan 5 million usd in a year. That is more than most Americans will ever make in a lifetime. No one does anything to deserve that much money. No one needs more than that to live a comfortable life.

how do we rebuild independence from platforms that have / do extract our value from us as artists, while still acknowledging our interdependence to build communities of Digital Art together?

With the end of a car lease, been trying to do the Denver hood on an e-bike. Finding that all the commercial plazas have gotten rid of bike racks. One employee told me that it was coz bike ppl hang out and the businesses want ppl to come and go quickly. Our society is so fucking dumb.

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

more thoughts on code art categories: sometimes a system is carefully constructed and crafted and seeing its effects are the "point"; other times it feels more like the artist is documenting an unknown terrain that they found; other times the code is just the means to get to some aesthetic output.

AI can compress utility coding, but creative coding was never only a route to utilities. It trains a felt sense of causality: change a rule, watch a world answer. If it becomes bespoke, the loss may be less technical skill than public access to procedural thinking. What keeps that ecology porous?

This thread and some further replies in the comments about coding and being an artist in this moment…

i tried opus 5.5. for 15 years my bio has said "artist working with code". today i changed it to "artist".

Spent a week thinking about creative coding as a process being different than the coding artists do to achieve tool for a larger artwork and the space in between these since the “utility” coding is “solvable” with AI. 1/?

We have also spent years explaining creative coding as a gateway to “serious coding” and a general next level of technical access and job viability. That seems less clear of a pathway now with AI quickly whipping all the utilities you need in complex projects where yhe process is decentered. 2/?

Perhaps creative coding moves to the bespoke space of analog synths and hand weaving - it is an art form but not one “every” digital artist needs to learn moving forward? I wonder what this does to the broader ecology we have been building for 25 years… 3/3

OH from University Admin: “Time to get the bad AI company money and take it to the bank.” The idea that this moment where AI wants to improve their look, we should take and use that money for good stuff. Vs taking money from rich evil white guy foundation…
