The story Priest tells in The Recollections covers the long gestation of the movie adaptation and his thoughts on the process and end results. Well worth a read if you're a fan of The Prestige.

The perfect time to pick up a copy of not just the novel of The Prestige, but The Recollections, which includes Priest's long essay about the film: briardenebooks.uk/product/the-...

Seeking recommendations for Book Riot, my lovelies: What are some Native and Indigenous SFF that you're excited about releasing this year? SFF that leans horror is totally fine as well. Links appreciated!

While I'm generally of the view that, yes, you should stockpile a bit of pasta if you can, the provision of bottled water in emergencies is literally the job of water companies and following a drought for which the public are being blamed, I do think asking we stock up is pretty fucking brass necked

Charlotte Lydia Riley@lottelydia.bsky.social

sorry, but the British government now apparently envisages a scenario that would require me to keep forty eight litres of drinking water in my house for emergencies? oh right I’ll just shove it in the reservoir I’ve got in the back bedroom then

The BL quietly transforming itself into a WeWork seems like a bad idea, all things considered. If we had a Culture Secretary I’m sure they’d be all over it.

Leaving aside the rampaging elephant in the room of the degradation of access to the Library's collections since the cyberattack, my main question on reading this is why historians are still posting on X, a platform that incites violence against humans of many 'sorts' and monetises misogyny.

For an organisation so desperate to save money, the BBC seems to have an unusually large visual effects budget to spend on covering or removing queer flags and slogans.

One of the things that most struck me about WWAS was how open and multifaceted it is in terms of the topics and themes it engages with. This is a great discussion that unpacks more of them than I could do.

So very excited this is out in the world. Kinda want to see one of these each year, now, on a different book...

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

BIOWARE IS DEAD. NOW WHAT? A thread to panic read on what happens next to your beloved games and servers, and where to find Devs that made that thing you love.

Dragon Age has become a huge part of my life right now and seeing the news that Bioware is shutting down sure stings. But remember that a lot of the devs are off starting their own projects and opening new studios - there are still stories to be told. Go out and find them, support them.

The fact that corporations did not value the human impact of Bioware games is devastating. We love the studio because of their humanity, not because of fancy graphics or multiplayer or microtransactions or anything else shunted in to generate revenue. All EA had to do was leave Bioware alone.

In the wake of the awful Bioware news, I am remembering just how beautiful all the moments in Veilguard where you got to explicitly state your character's transness, have it affect their journey and tie into Taash's own self-discovery of their identity was. Goddamn.

Zoe TunnHELL@zoewithasword.bsky.social

Truly feels unreal to have this moment in a huge AAA sprawling RPG, of which many trans folks had a hand in making Just, damn. What an incredible thing.

Much to my surprise, during the last election campaign Ed Miliband turned up on my doorstep. He was very persuasive, said he understood my doubts about Labour, but promised they would deliver on Green issues. “Won’t get fooled again” as the song goes

Zack Polanski@zackpolanski.bsky.social

Today's decision by Labour to approve new drilling in the North Sea is climate vandalism. It's a betrayal of all of our futures, and Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change. This is a victory for Shell over the people. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cw...

It's a beautiful little book - and the Bayeaux-style aesthetic is both timely and content-appropriate; the art and design is just lovely. And the story itself is glorious; just really nicely done in a very timeless fairytale style. Very pleasing throughout, honestly.

A lot of aspects of "left-wing" antisemitism are dispiriting and depressing, but "why would people fleeing pogroms and genocide not identify with the country perpetrating said pogroms and genocide? must be a global Jewish conspiracy" puts the lie to so many of the values these people purport to hold

Joel S.@joelhs.bsky.social

Netanyahu is a genocidal war criminal who belongs in the Hague, but Jews were not considered ethnic Poles based on the Polish government, and Polish Jewish last names were forced on families against their will. This kind of conspiratorial rhetoric about Jews faking their identity is gross.

How very very... normal... of them

Did a class on Charles Coughlin’s 1930s anti-Semitic broadcasts. Student (a good one, no shade) argued he should have been allowed on air because free speech. I pushed back: “that protects him from being arrested, it doesn’t guarantee him radio airtime.” Which the class hadn’t quite considered.

Gatekeeping is often good actually quite a lot of the time and although people frequently fail or refuse to understand why it's usually at least in part a project of preserving the value of the work people are already contributing in a community or space.

As with so many things when it comes to porn and how it influences people - especially young people - I think the answer is education. But we remain, as a society, terrified of actually engaging with the idea of learning about sex.
