NEWS --> Dems are planning novel ways to wield power of the purse against Trump's corrupt prosecutions of critics like Ilhan Omar if they win House. Reps Pramila Jayapal and Jamie Raskin tell me a range of aggressive tactics will be deployed.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

'When I asked Mayer if it’s somewhat depressing to imagine a frictionless future when birthday celebrations, holiday gifts and family vacations are planned by A.I., she seemed caught off guard.
'“I haven’t really thought that through,” she said.'
Yeah. We noticed.

in a dark sort of irony, this too is gender:
we displace agency from men onto women as a way of excusing their abuse—what did you say to make him hit you?
likewise, the (male-coded) political right is always understood as being provoked by the (female & queer-coded) left
did you know the IRS hasn't actually measured tax evasion in over a decade?
due to lack of budget and workforce, the IRS is incapable of performing the random audits necessary to estimate tax evasion
they've been forced to reuse the same numbers from 2016
"The rejection rate is at about 3% statewide, and two or three times as high as in some larger counties.

Talarico using weasel words is one (disappointing) thing. This dude is actively advocating for tremendous harm. If he's willing to endanger me and my loved ones, what makes you so sure he won't do the same for yours? Advocating for active harm against coalition members needs to be disqualifying
Otherwise what's the fucking point of a coalition? We can have a big tent, sure, but you've gotta throw out people actively trying to stab others in the tent. Even for the most "pragmatic," there's gotta be a hard line somewhere.
Also, studies show that when we improve a space or system for the disabled, the benefits actually spread to everyone.
You’re not just helping yourself later; you’re helping yourself right now.
This is literally the end of the rule of law.
If a President can pardon people committing crimes on his behalf - and the Supreme Court says he himself can't be prosecuted for crimes committed as part of his job - then the government becomes a lawless entity able to violate our rights without limit.
New: White House attorneys are evaluating whether to issue mass pardons to junior staffers.

This is solid gold, y'all. "A.i." in education is privatized, predatory bullshit pushed by people who don't actually support public education. Thank you @naomiaklein.bsky.social and Arundhati Roy! www.instagram.com/reel/De4IE6H...
Toby has been so forceful in making this important point: look at what's happened to trans rights in the UK, and you see the end result of where moral compromise in the US will inevitably lead:
there's been a worldwide campaign against trans people—nowhere has it been stronger (& less opposed) than the uk

“We must finally confront and uproot the core of the U.S.’s anti-immigrant underbelly, which is largely reflected in the racially motivated notion of criminalization.” - Laura Hernandez in @truthout.orgtruthout.org/articles/cli...
the notion that there was an epidemic of people getting fired for honest pronoun mistakes is so divorced from reality it's difficult to know where to start with it
Really? There's nothing remotely "nasty" about El-Sayed's campaign, which offers a positive, upbeat, inclusive message. The nastiness resides entirely within the campaign of Mike Rogers. Indeed, "nastiness" isn't the word—it's brutal racism.
"But the framing of Ramaswamy’s ad also suggests there is another audience his campaign has in mind: aging MAGA voters who are obsessively angry about the phenomenon of parental estrangement."

You can skip the gender metaphysics debate entirely if you say, "I don't care about that. I care about the material consequences trans people experience for living the way they want to," and then hammer the point home that no amount of gender metaphysics can ever justify transfemicide.
I do think that a major failure point of a lot of mainstream trans activism is the focus on responding to attacks on trans people in the same arena that those attacks are being made, i.e., indulging the notion that this is a philosophical debate over gender metaphysics and trying to win that one.
there's a kind of vague received wisdom that counterculture is associated with the left, but a whole lot of it is just conspiratorial, anti-participatory, low-trust, and anti-institutional, and that applies especially to 60s through 90s counterculture whose descendants are the green party and maha
A new data analysis shows that delays resulting from the U.S. Postal Service’s cost-cutting measures have endangered the validity of ballots cast in rural areas across the country. The rates of primary ballots rejected for arriving late has doubled or tripled in some areas compared to 2022.
I said that this was a Russian trope at the time in testimony to Congress and am glad to see this excellent documentation of Russia’s use of Vance’s vocal chords.
Leaks from Putin's office have revealed an extensive influence operation targeting JD Vance, which achieved everything it set out to achieve. Read all about how JD Vance and others fell for a lie about Volodymyr Zelensky concocted by agents of Russia's Presidential Administration. And how the Vice
In the past, the rich used to pay higher taxes.
Now, the government pays the rich interest on a swelling debt, caused largely by lower taxes on the rich.
It's a big switcheroo that we need to talk about if we're going to talk about the national debt.
In 2022, even before ChatGPT was publicly available, Jane Rosenzweig argued that the danger of AI writing was that we would “lose our commitment to the idea that we ought to believe what we say and write.” @janerosenzweig.bsky.social
The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot
A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

Glad to see CNN reporting on this. @jimacosta.bsky.social and I raised concerns about DHS potentially using a military-grade “heat ray.”
After 20+ years in national security, I find this deeply troubling.
A weapon designed to inflict intense pain. Against civilians?
Why does DHS need this?

“Universities exist precisely because specialized knowledge matters. The further decisions move from those with the expertise, the more educational quality suffers, and the more students bear the consequences.”
About 7 years ago I went on a campaign to convince people that the CIO role was about to become the most powerful de facto academic officer at the university; should be subsumed to faculty governance. The LMS was their opening gambit, then brand cohesion & centralized syllabus databases. Now AI.
Trump: "If you elected a Republican House and Senate on November 3, you're gonna get $5,000. And if we lose, you get nothing. You're gonna get nothing! If we lose, you get nothing. Make it a lot easier vote."
I never would've expected Americans to get so accustomed to fascist madness. Every day there are 5 new outrages that make me think I must be having a nightmare. Yet some people around me act as if it's just normal life.
Frankly, a little more healthy panic would reassure me.
I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.
Democratic-aligned group Progress Action Fund has released a PRO-trans ad, attacking Republicans for being creepy in bathrooms.
It will run in Texas and Ohio, and is expected to reach millions.
