Rewrite every headline about an AI doing something illegal as the owners of the AI doing something illegal. Strict liability could end this madness.

Trump happened because huge numbers of voters are desperate for radical change and care more about getting rid of the status quo than details of how. Trump offered "smash it all" and the DLC Democrats are offering "minor tweaks but at all costs preserve the conditions that lead to Trump."

This is brain candy for me. I've been obsessed with this kind of thing since I was a teenager. I can't wait.

Lindsay Beyerstein@beyerstein.bsky.social

I’ve been dying to share this news for weeks and now I can finally tell you. I sold my book!

There's a mindset I think comes from excessive exposure to commercial advertising which leads directly to this attitude. It's a relentless focus on stuff at the expense of process or personal connection. It sees life as a series of things that can be purchased. 1/

...and it is most certainly not the development and nurture of connections to other people. Just get the thing. That is happiness. Possession. And once the thing is in hand there's a little burst of happiness that quickly fades. And the hunger returns. Because things cannot provide meaning. 3/

Only connections to others or meaningful effort towards a goal can give true satisfaction. And the best of all is both, tasks done together, working towards something good for all involved. That can't be bought, so we do not get bombarded with messages about it.

People are constantly exposed to ads all of which have the same underlying assumption: whatever your problem, whatever your desire, whatever your goal, the solution is buying something. It is an act of acquisition, not a process of developing, growing, or earning... 2/

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

If I could change one thing about the US education system it would be mandatory rigorous instruction in probability and statistics.

bsky please be advised, the timeline is beginning to talk about whether medians reflect populations again

You know, the thing is, I had drafted this piece a month ago, and then never published it, because I thought maybe it was too mean.

Read the whole thing, then check out my pinned post. This is the critical factor shaping the future. Everything depends on fighting back against these people.

There are many ways in which every billionaire is a policy failure, but the most corrosive and destructive way in which billionaires are policy failures is this: billionaires, despite being unelected and unaccountable, possess the power to control - and ruin - millions of peoples' lives.

This is really good, and accurate. They ain’t your Danbury Baptists anymore. “Those of us who follow white evangelicalism will tell you until we are blue in the face that our current political crisis is actually a religious one.”

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

“What most political analysts miss is how strong and specific the authoritarian appeal is for white evangelicals, and how critical it is to at least weaken it. The roots of this confluence go back decades, if not centuries, and are deeply entwined with white evangelical theology itself.”

This is the third author I've seen this happen to. Amazon needs to be held directly accountable for facilitating this, and all the money from sales of the plaigarized book should be given to the real author including Amazon's cut. This doesn't end unless Bezos loses money over it the more the better

We have the ability to provide everyone in the world with food, shelter, clothing, clean water, and basic health care. But we don't. There is no reason to believe that AI will change that rather than increasing the power of greedy evil bastards. Any sacrifice for AI should be theirs, not ours.

Remember when us phil-tech types said effective altruism was just utilitarianism taken to its worst possible extents? This is what we meant: Real harm for unquantifiable potential benefit. "…'we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology….'"

I often show people this Rufo tweet to illustrate how deliberately, and masterfully, the far right has twisted language to create political useful divisions. Of course, he didn’t invent it - it’s a refined, modern-day Southern Strategy.

This is a big f’ing deal. Story at the newsletter right now, and full explainer coming soon (so make sure you’re subscribed to AED) Three anti-abortion states are asking the Supreme Court to allow them to extradite abortion providers from pro-choice states.

You may have seen a few familiar MAGA faces distance themselves from Trump this past week. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Peter Thiel. Sen. John Kennedy. But hold your applause for now, because their courage just happened to show up when the cost of speaking out got cheap. (link below)

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

Dubya seriously hurt US credibility with two botched wars and the biggest economic crisis since 1929. MAGA has reduced it to zero. Trump is a symptom - a pustule not the plague. This is now recognized by most allies, and they are adjusting to build a world order with less reliance on the USA.

Forensic pathologist Darin Wolfe says that he only finds water in the lungs in about 5% of the drowning autopsies he does.

NO FLUID was found in Nolan Wells' lungs or airways, per the autopsy report by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner. How do you die by "accidental drowning" if there is no water in your lungs?

I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️
