*An AI visual slop-engine will fulfill its prompt, but parts of the image that aren't prioritized will often decay into chaotic rubbish *But an AI chess engine always seems entirely engaged with every piece on the entire board. It's not choosy *Is that so, or does it just look that way to humans

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

What an incredible day for democracy. ❤️ Students defeat an EU-backed authoritarian regime in Serbia. 🇷🇸 Lula defeats a far-right nepo baby whose backers interfere with turnout in Brazil. 🇧🇷

I remember when I used to bring up the genetically engineered dogs they made in China (IIRC) with increased bone and muscle mass and wonder hopefully whether that was research that could be used to solve the health problems of humans in long-term microgravity.

A security vulnerability doesn't require malicious code or a hidden backdoor. Sometimes the vulnerability is the ability to turn the system off. Ukraine just learned that. Every U.S. ally is watching.

During my time at the National Security Council, my colleagues and I worked to persuade European allies to reject Huawei’s 5G technology. The concern was not simply that Huawei was a Chinese company, or that we distrusted Beijing. open.substack.com/pub/alexande...

Parents, please check your kids’ candy this Halloween. I’ve just found an ancient metal whistle with the inscription “QUIS EST ISTE QUI VENIT" inside a Snickers bar. I blew it and heard a note of infinite distance, and now I’m haunted by a figure in pale, fluttering draperies. Be safe.

The macOS built-in curl, git, pip, python3, perl, ruby, and openssl all read /etc/ssl/cert.pem, which still has the emSign root, but they don't check revocation like Apple's Secure Transport libraries. This is, uh, a problem. git and pip especially. I added a short-term workaround to this page.

Edited «AI will fix security» This mistakes a tooling problem for a people problem. The solutions to fixing security defects have existed for decades. The main challenges are liability, pressure to deliver fast, and consequence if something goes wrong, and AI fixes none of them. #ai #appsec #games
