Huzzah!!! Huzzah!!!!!

CSS-Tricks*@css-tricks.com

CSS-Tricks has a new owner! Yes, I've got the keys to the castle, so to speak. And, even after 12 years of working on the site, I'll admit I'm a little overwhelmed and nervous about that. https://css-tricks.com/css-tricks-has-a-new-owner/

It’s looking increasingly likely that I’m going to need to start earning a much more regular salary than freelancing is providing, so if anyone has any leads on remote front-end dev roles please hit me up. Everyone I’ve worked with says I’m proactive, communicative & great at what I do.

After a decade at Cloudinary, I am looking work. I'm a web developer who's done a lot of devrel, too. I'm good at the front of the front end, great at browsers and standards and deeply understanding and explaining technical topics, and the stem of my T-shaped skills is: "images, on the internet".

An SVG inside <img> has always been a styling dead end: you can place it, but you can’t paint it. CSS Linked Parameters fix that in Firefox Nightly, so I traced Warhol’s Marilyn and repainted it nine times from one 50 KB file 💅 pepelsbey.dev/articles/svg...

`lowsrc`!

One more call for feedback! Yeah, I know, I often ask for feedback but, think about it, the more you share, the better the feature. 💡Support low-quality image placeholders on the web! ➡️<img previewsrc="preview.avif" src="photo.avif"> ❓Would you use this? What capabilities do you need? Read more⬇️

Substantively: - Can't wait to see a prototype and how it behaves vs CSS background images, progressive JPEG-XLs, and file-embedded previews like AVIF has been developing - Interactions with intrinsic size and LCP are gonna be weird - Previews SHOULD deliver legibility > beauty; hard problem!

Hey! You there, looking at a screen. You should read a little Wendell Berry today. And think about your values, work, and tools; your one precious life on this one precious earth. RIP Wendell Berry. www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazi...

RIP Wendell Berry, one of the world's great writers, champions of the environment, and exemplar of slow living. A few years ago I wrote about analog vs. digital tools, inspired by his "Why I Will Not Buy a Computer" which felt appropriate to revisit this morning. seanvoisen.com/writing/wend...

The only sane tab behaviour is open to the right of current and close to immediate left. It means that open+close returns you to where you were and the only option that keeps large volume manageable. That it's not in common use shows how much cargo-culting goes into UI design.

Twice a year, Hawai'i experiences a strange moment where the sun appears to be exactly overhead & anything that is completely vertical casts no shadow. Let's learn about Lāhainā Noon, subsolar points & 'Kau ka lā i ka lolo', meaning "the sun rests on the brains."

The features @miriam.codes has helped bring to CSS (Cascade Layers, Container Queries, Scope) have been rooted in a deep understanding of CSS’ _ethos_. They try to close the gap between how CSS could be used, and how it commonly is. If you want to close that gap in your own work (I do!), sign up

briarpress.org is an amazing community and practicing a craft is fulfilling. And: watching the last generation of professional printers age, keep up the hobby in their garages, enthusiastically answer a dwindling number of questions on internet forums, and pass away, has been: sad. We lost so much.

Maybe for creative code and personal projects, I could see people showing their skills- just like advanced lithography made printmaking for newspapers obsolete but then a small amount of presses were brought back for artistic purposes

So we're all made of stardust AND we only exist because several of our ancestors caught the worst colds of their lives and ended up with superpowers. Cool.

How did complex cells emerge? In this groundbreaking paper, @tonigabaldon.bsky.social & co show that eukaryotes arose through multiple waves of ancient genetic exchange involving diverse bacteria (& giant viruses!) revealing a far more complex origin than we imagined. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Hell yeah

I'm sad to miss you all at #CSSDay this year! Wish I could be there, and see all the great talks. In the spirit of the event, I'm launching my new #CSS course – Poetic CSS! The first module is ready, and early bird tickets will go on sale for the month of July. courses.oddbird.net/poetic-css/

Responsive images syntax was always a compromise forced by constraints. Lazy-loading removes the one of those constraints. Now we have an opportunity to simplify responsive images. Let's make it happen! cloudfour.com/thinks/endin...
