The tragedy of Biden's presidency is not its lack of success, but how little its success was recognized. The claim Democrats don't have a policy program is false. Finishing the projects Biden began, working with Bernie Sanders and others, should be central to the project of the next president.
Hear me out. Bidenomics was working and we should go back to that.

Carl Schmitt was the lawyer who helped Adolf Hitler deconstruct the Weimar Constitution following the Nacht der langen Messer. Here Sunstein points out that the reasoning and arguments used by JD Vance are Schmittian. Considering that Vance's advisor Curtis Yarvin is a Schmitt-follower, no surprise.

Like @joshjohnsoncomedy.bsky.social said, Mamdani just pushed the button.
My entire life I've heard centrists scolding leftist candidates with "oh, but how will we pay for all that? isn't your agenda unreasonable? shouldn't we run on a modest proposal for means-tested tax rebates?" Then Mamdani gets elected and makes it all look pretty easy. No wonder they hate him.

The president is threatening to sue a think tank for $5 billion unless they retract a report stating that his National Guard deployments to American cities under the guise of fake emergencies didn't make those cities safer. It's like a Con Law exam question about executive abuse of power.

No matter what metric you use, Republicans have been worse for the economy than Democrats for a century now. And yet they’ll *still* point to the latest mess they created as an argument to elect them again. And half the media will happily help carry their water for them.
I know Grassly is old but do you think he knows who is in charge in the 3 branches of government now?

“I don't like your kind of people. I don't like to see you come out to this clean country in oily hair, and dressed up in those silk suits, and try to pass yourselves off as decent Americans. I despise your masquerade; the dishonest way you pose yourself, yourself and your fucking family."
A century ago, white nationalists were saying the exact same things about Rep. Rulli's Italian ancestors -- they weren't white, they were criminals, they could never assimilate to "our" country

Amen. If you go into the archives looking to confirm a hunch, you'll likely find some random bit of evidence that fits. This is why "originalism" is considered a joke by actual historians. Finding one quote from one member of the founding generation who agrees with your hot take is pretty easy!
In my historical methods training, I was always taught “we start with a historical question.” I would never use “I’m testing a hypothesis” in my work. I might have a working theory or a working hypothesis, but I’m certainly never *testing* it. That’s ripe for cherry-picked, law office history.

Yep. @polphilpod.bsky.social and I made this point in this essay on Elon Musk's real fascist worldview, which all of you should read if you haven't yet, because (we immodestly insist) it breaks new ground. Also see the interview with one of the authors of "Muskism." newrepublic.com/article/2119...
You don't engage in that kind of ethnic cleansing through peaceful and lawful individuated assessments. If you even aspire to that level of population transfer, you expect things like mass detention facilities and the transformation of ICE into a terrorist paramilitary.

My take on Lee is that he understood the (legitimately useful!) principle that rolling the dice/moving decisively can be a huge factor in battles, but was much fuzzier on the concept that you’re going to roll as many 1s as you do 6s when you throw them bones
Every year around this time I watch Gettysburg, and every year I'm so impressed as to how both Ronald Maxwell and Martin Sheen do a great job making Lee look like an absolute dumbass for four straight hours without being obvious about it.
