I have some advice. Don’t buy a house. If you must buy a house, buy it unfurnished. If you must buy it furnished, get rid of everything you don’t want to keep forever. Then, don’t buy anything new. If you must buy new things, make sure you want to keep those things, too. Never move.

I keep feeling like there’s so much to pack but most of the furniture in this house is not coming with us. I don’t even want to keep the towels and sheets we bought. So they shall become packing material. And I will try to keep calm and pack on.

A recent securities filing spotlighted what triggered Mark Zuckerberg’s months-long power battle with board directors at Meta — a fight that sparked not-so-veiled threats from Zuckerberg and led board members to contemplate quitting.

So I expected to have an episode out last week… But we are moving in 4 days. So I will see what I can pull off. Hoping to get one out this week before the midterms. And then there’s one I’m so excited to get to you and wanted to go before the election but … with any luck it’ll be even better after.

In both countries, the opposition ran heavily on the platform of transparency, accountability and asset recovery. The last of these items, the pledge to establish new independent bodies to recover misused funds and illicitly gained wealth from corrupt politicians, is particularly noteworthy.

One question I always ask of a choropleth map is whether it is any more helpful than a table. Is there anything inherently spatial about the pattern? And do people know what's where? Maybe enough people have a sense of which states are where. Probably less so for counties within a state.

The only real Census-defined generation in the US is the Baby Boomers because there is a very clear surge and decline in birth rates across those years, with claar explanations for both surge and decline. Every other “generation” gets revised every few years so there’s something to write about.

In fairness - to begin with 72-80 had no generational name for a bit there. Then they revised the shoulders of X and Millennials. There were suggestions of The Oregon Trail Generation, and Generation Catalano. Mostly: Xennials. Now we’re starting Millennial later and ending Gen X earlier.

But don’t be fooled into thinking any of this is real. Generations are mostly made up by columnists and marketers’ (agencies) so they have something to talk about when they talk about young citizens and consumers.

I can confirm. Indivisible Action spends about a dime of every dollar raised on fundraising costs, which is very efficient. They are a good example of what a genuine grassroots operation looks like.

We’ve seen a lot of recent reporting on shady fundraising tactics that get Democratic consultants rich, but don’t do much to help Democratic campaigns. So let us be as clear as humanly possible: Every dollar you donate today will be spent on winning the midterms and protecting the results.

Ok @jvl.bsky.social hi. Love your work but you are going to drive me, a market researcher and brand strategist absolutely up the wall with your Lay’s story. They assumed a mass market brand as cheap as Lay’s was more likely made of potato powder - like Pringles! - or was otherwise “not natural.”

Ex.: I worked on a campaign for a HPV vaccine. Until I drew a simplified diagram (literally “HPV —> cervical cancer”) people didn’t fully grok that the company meant it literally that a virus causes cancer - why? Not because they can’t read but because that was not their mental model for cancer yet.

I’ve got a million of these. Yes. Some people are stupid. Smart people can be pretty dumb too. But this Lay’s story is not a story about low intelligence. It’s a story about low trust. Anyway. Carry on.

I could tell you a million stories of things people assume about an array of products and services - even people who are experts or super users - that are wrong. That’s just the way cognitive conservation works - we just don’t need to know until we need to know.

Ex.: I worked on the repositioning of USA network back in the day. Nobody knew why it was called USA and often asked if it stood for something. It stands for USA.🇺🇸 The interesting thing was not “how dumb are they” - it was, “how might this network earn that name?”

And in a food market increasingly defined by GLP-1s, looksmaxxing, and MAHA, against a backdrop of inflation, a junk food brand charging more than they used to needed a “whole food” story to attempt to turn sales around.

When you read more about what the research found it’s that people didn’t know it was made from whole, real potatoes as opposed to a potato derived, highly processed substance. Yes, people are dumb. It’s not hard to find out it’s real potatoes. But sometimes you have to remind people of things.

It’s not that they had no idea what Lay’s are made of. It’s that they didn’t know that whole ass potatoes, grown by dedicated farmers, were sliced and cooked before packaging because… junk food is junk!

There are some days when I begin to feel that a village, with an iconic pond in which they used to dunk “witches”, has a cursed energy. We are trying to move out but the very nature of this place is threatening our plans. We will leave, but it’ll be a struggle to do so on our own terms.

My husband was in a minor fender bender, we need the rear gate repaired. The collision place wanted “a couple of weeks” to finish it. We’re aiming to leave in 9 days. Obviously I said that won’t work. But I fear they’ll ensure we have to leave a day later than we want to. Sigh.

This x100. The much discussed Balancing Costs (part of dealing with intermittent renewables) are up by 20% in 6 years, from a small-ish base. Not nothing, but not that much either. Transmission costs are the big rise among network costs, and a lot of that probably isn't even net zero-related

Tom Haddon@tomh-analyst.bsky.social

Worthwhile noting that a lot of network transmission cost is replacement of the super grid that generally has 60 year component design life and was largely built out about 60 years ago.
