American conservatives are constantly bemoaning the decline of aesthetic standards and calling for a return to tailored suits and classical Roman architecture, but are now forced to defend the Cheesecake Factory. A constant tension between the Brooks Brothers patrician and the Kid Rock populist.

*second bong rip* if we view RFK and MAHA as the culmination of a vast disgust-based movement against evidence and life itself, we’re in a grim place. it’s not easy to un-disgust people. you can’t logic them or fact them out of it. you want to know the best way out of disgust? teaching ppl empathy

*bong rip* the reason why wellness folks can be vulnerable to fascism is because wellness in the 21st century generally encourages a disgust and revulsion at one’s self and the society around you.

The evil version of myself that I trapped in the mirror is always saying stuff like "let me out, I'm not the evil one, you're literally holding a skull right now". Be quiet or I'll throw my skull at you

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: nom nom nom gimme dat seed corn i have to eat all the seed corn bsky.app/profile/twil...

“The Luddites were rentiers” is fucking wild.

SE Gyges@segyges.bsky.social

a lot of opposition to AI is rent seeking, and the material incentives of being a rentier, even a small time one, lead you towards fascist conclusions from first principles

Last night while smoking @deedeer.bsky.social came up with new characters “The Lubbers Three” who are identical, grumpy duck sailor brothers who just kind of sit on a bench and introduce themselves a lot. “Hidey ho hee / we’re the Lubbers Three / we sit by the water and we sneer at the sea.”

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

A world where a twist ending is repurposed as a video title. where a thing's climax has been removed, leaving an advertisment for the gap where it used to be. such things are commonplace in. the twilight zone

Reacher (book) kills white supremacists (fictional), but Reacher (streaming) hasn't yet despite Alan Ritchson (Reacher (streaming)) wanting to because of studio fear of white supremacists (actual, government).

A significant percentage of the 71% of people that are exhausted all the time fucking voted for the Permanent Exhaustion Regime because of egg prices and burrito taxis. The median voter is a total menace.

Maybe the most important political story of our time. People just want the bullshit to stop.

“Now the question is what happens to our digital games as we move towards an increasingly digital future. Do you actually own those digital games? What happens to them when you die? Can you play them offline without having to check in with a server?” We know these answers now. They just suck.

Historically, there have been two rough ideas of Lovecraft: one who was considered "normal for his time" and one who is "extremely racist." Synthesizing those into "he was normal for his time and extremely racist" is probably better at approximating historical truth but ...

Meditation of the day: the dark secret about H. P. Lovecraft that nobody wants to talk about

... it also places you into direct agreement with a revanchist wing of Lovecraft fans who go the extra step of "he was extremely racist but it was normal for his time _so we should not criticize him for it_" and those fans are still everywhere. Go look at the comments to Chaosium's Gamefound.

It's also worth noting that specific people write a parodically-racist Lovecraft, like Bitter Karella and Brian Clevenger, and those people aren't using HPL as some sort of sin-eater to absolve all racism. People can admit that HPL was not _exceptional_ while still using him as an example.

This remake of the Halo: Reach Warthog charge kind of sucks.

The Houthi-aligned Bani Hashish tribes are massing in preparation to “liberate” the remaining Yemeni territory outside Houthi control. It’s a sea of Toyotas with mounted machine guns. I think this is what we should mean when we say Toyotathon from now on.
