"Indies will save us" No! YOU WILL SAVE INDIES! Go leave a review for that neat indie game you like, share the trailer for an upcoming game you're anticipating, tell your fave developer they did a good job, go tell people about such and such game that's just come out, you can make a difference!

Blue Bottle Games, as a policy, does not use generative AI. It's something we've discussed as a team, weighing the pros and cons, and ultimately, we decided it was not for us. Recently, while chatting with a colleague, she mentioned it was useful hearing our reasoning. So: Sharing time! 1/12

Your reminder to leave reviews for the things you like, and if you aren't one to write much even two words and a thumbs up or five stars means that little extra bump in visibility or approach to the next threshold of rating.

The only reason anyone can access any part of the games that jumpstarted my career anymore is an entire group of dedicated fans archived episodes of the mobile game by recording it, video by video, with months of grueling effort before the apps vanished and servers disconnected.

Imran Khan@imrankhan.bsky.social

If you're curious what a non-preservationist gaming ecosystem looks like, you can look at the mobile stores, where most of the shit you remember does not exist in any form anymore.

i've made an amazing discovery: if you make your own game you get to do things that make you happy. therefore I can spend 3 hours making funny little CDDs

As the director of a historical video game preservation institution, and someone who has dedicated his entire adult life to this cause, this is accurate. We have attempted to work with the industry's trade organization to find a legal path forward, but they refuse to offer a meaningful alternative.

Chloe@addamschloe.bsky.social

piracy is the only extant form of media preservation that exists in games right now, you might find it morally reprehensible but there is literally no other institution that will keep games alive in 25, 50 years' time

For years we have been overwhelmed by the volume of code contributions we have to review, especially from new contributors. AI has made the problem much worse. That's why we are taking steps to reduce the burden on maintainers while still welcoming new contributors: godotengine.org/article/cont...

godotengine.orgChanges to our Contribution Policies – Godot EngineGodot is growing fast, so here is how we are dealing with the huge increase in contributions.

my programmer friends have been venting to me a LOT lately about how awful this feels even internally at companies - being handed broken code by coworkers and when you ask them about it, they say "I don't know, claude wrote it". a fundamental abandonment of responsibility to your peers

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

This is such a good point that I had never really thought about, w/r/t AI use in open source projects.

"Game dev is one of those jobs you only do when you really want to. It's not going to make your parents proud, you're unlikely to get rich in an industry that lays off people for making superhits, and its a demanding & confrontative job. Why would you let a machine do the thing you're here to do?"

Austin Wood@woodwould.bsky.social

I spent the last few months talking to over 30 game developers about generative AI. It began as a sort of interview survey but became a pretty comprehensive collection of arguments against the technology altogether. www.gamesradar.com/games/why-so...

This article is SO fucking funny. "The real problem is there aren't enough 50+ game designers!" Yeah, agreed. Any thoughts on why that might be? Like maybe the fact that this industry fires treats anyone over 35 as "not hungry enough", and relies on burning out a steady stream of younger devs? no?

Mat Piscatella@matpiscatella.bsky.social

"An entire generation has now grown up playing video games and is ageing... where they have time, money, and the desire to keep playing. The first publishers to actually see this player will capture a structural advantage. The rest will arrive 10 years late, exactly like they did with women."

so what I mean is that, for example, you can make a button feel way snappier and tactile if you just ease in rather than ease both ways. it's like breathing in and out, it's different motions. i notice a lot of game UI using ease inout and it bugs me a bit especially with buttons. thats my tedtalk

itch has an impressive track record in helping the under-served—often hosting charity fundraising bundles that wouldn't get visibility or support otherwise. Everyone wants to see this platform succeed. We're not sure how to improve their ticket response, but clearly something needs to change.

It's been over a year in the making, but the Speaker Series is happening in less than 2 weeks. Can't say that I'm not nervous about it, but at the same time I'm confident we've put together an all-star panel of speakers and topics for our first proper run of it. Gonna chat a bit about it.

We need a low barrier to entry option, and we're rapidly losing them all. Consoles WERE the on-ramp for new / returning players, esp later in the gen when prices were much more reasonable. If we lose the low barrier option, we will shrink our footprint (and phones aren't the answer in the West).

Chris Person@papapishu.bsky.social

Skeptical of the idea that the increasing price of hardware de facto leads to a renewed interest in indie games, that’s a nice idea but I think there’s no actual evidence for it and it undersells the degree to which even entry level devices are getting fucked over here.

What's something that experts/practitioners in your field universally agree upon, but that remains a "hot take" among the general public?

I just noticed that the answer to the AI generation disclosure is now included in the game's info panel on itch. You've now got double the reason not to use one of your 10 tag slots on "No AI" When you only get 10 tags, you gotta optimize

PSA: Answering "No" to the AI generation disclosure on itch automatically adds your project to the "No AI" tag ( itch.io/games/tag-no... ). Adding it to the tag field too just wastes one of your 10 tag slots (if you want a visible indicator that no genAI was used, add it to the description instead)
