@fentiger.wtf

I first showed up here while experimenting with decentralised/distributed social media software. A few real-life friends are starting to show up now, though. Hmm. AKA @FenTiger on the Fediverse, or Wrongfellow in a few other places.

This now supports Wafrn's cross-protocol identities properly!

Visualise your online identity as a graph! See how your accounts are related via rel="me" and other links: glider.mythik.co.uk Now Bluesky has profile page links, I got around to adding Atmosphere identifiers too. Yes, this is my elaborate way of asking for rel="me" support ;)

maybe an opportunity to unlock a broadly interoperable login/identity flow is what is needed to make AP C2S happen after all this time.

After the firefighting is done (and a nap) we'll need to have a long, serious conversation about the state of non-browser non-platform X.509 verifiers. The Linux status quo is "a pile of PEM files behind a dumpster" and that's not an acceptable excuse for a root store in 2026.

the way things are handled server-side is especially shit. sysadmins should not have to be in a rush to patch all their systems if you run any AT Protocol, ActivityPub, XMPP, etc services, you are vulnerable to some gnarly nasty stuff. why they don't check CRL/OCSP, i dont know, they really should

With open software, however, there's an expectation that if a project is made that benefits of others then people are entitled to have a say in it or that being denied a feature is "not listening to their public". But... You aren't public! You're someone who's benefiting from someone's generosity.

Played with a steam engine toy circa 1950 today. Seems to run about 30Hz, based on the video feed capturing it as nearly still. The company that built this, Mamod, closed in 2024, after existing for almost 90 years.

alr ive sent this in a few smaller/private places now and gotten relatively good first impressions so im throwing it into the wild cause i cant wait any longer! ive been thinking about DID methods for far too long and im starting to like my idea here. tell me what you think atproto nerds :3

I'm assuming anything I hear from a company that big and good at manipulating media is 99-100% bullshit and have no idea why anyone treats them otherwise. Maybe cuz they have "intelligence" in the name of their company or something?

This comes off as a joke, but I seriously think a *lot* of this comes from people who were raised on movies and cartoons that depicted sci-fi robots as sentient beings and believe genAI is the same thing instead of just a very convincing chatbot.

this seems like a real issue w/ the design of atproto in its present form tbh. i really don't want all my accounts to be entangled with my social media such that if the mods don't appreciate my tone i effectively no longer exist on all the other apps in the ecosystem

ponder@ponder.ooo

something i hadn't considered about using tangled while not running my own pds is it means the bluesky social media moderation staff can lock me out of being able to push to my fucking git repos

An unexpected bonus of the AI revolution: Sometimes it is useful to give your idiot coworkers enough rope to hang themselves. Today, #GenAI is capable of producing huge quantities of rope, at a very high speed.

Today's job: Trying to explain to hardware engineers that the customer can boot up the machine first and only plug in the cable afterwards. Shockingly, they can even unplug the cable and then plug in a different one! Who'd have thought such #witchcraft could occur? #Ethernet #FPGA #BangHeadHere

@thisismissem.social @divy.zone and I recently went through an exploration of how the browser can help you login to websites with atproto accounts. We recently presented to the FedID CG and here is a sneak peek in case you couldn't join! This is early but we'd love your input before we go too far!

all I know about the data center debate is that being dogmatically “pro” or “anti” are equally untenable and intellectually lazy positions to hold. the real work of organizing labor power and local community agency is happening in the big messy middle. only the trolls engage at the polar opposites.

The Dark Lord Sauron's most powerful creation, the One Ring, has awoken. It wants to be found! He is searching for it too but he must not find it. When this post reaches 200 likes, it will reveal itself to one of you. ⚔️ One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them...

Today's job: Try to understand some documentation that assumes I already know all the things it's trying to tell me. At least I'm getting paid to do this. #BangHeadHere

The fact that there is a dependency between the PDS and (an) appview is INSANE if you know much about designing resilient distributed systems. The whole thing is one big-ass dependency loop! I feel very foolish for just learning this now. Put it on the architecture diagram, cowards

Interesting to find that the National Disposable Barbecue Alert goes quiet if you take a screenshot of it. I think this idea could usefully be applied to social media, too.

Inspired by @pds.dad 's AMA about #atproto over on #Mastodon ... AMA about #ActivityPub and the #Fediverse! No question is too basic! (If questions get beyond my knowledge I'll at least try to point you in the right direction 😃)

Somehow I've managed to get a bit of stock cube in my coffee. I have no idea how, but I can tell from the taste. I think I actually quite like it.

tbh i think the thing that makes me feel the most out of place in a decent few programming circles is this idea a lot of people have that you would only ever make something if your goal is to "make it big" and become a big successful company. that business brained mindset makes me uncomfortable

🚨 stage 4 is live! 🚨

Meri@meri.garden

My @roomy.space roadmap for next few weeks: 1. Private spaces + invites 2. Permissioned channels + roles 3. Big refactor to AppView + XRPC interface / thin client 4. Push notifications all parallel to @zicklag.dev speccing and implementing an ‘arbiter’ RBAC service for ATProto permissioned spaces

So what you're suggesting is that the requirements for a data storage layer might depend on the design of the client application? Heresy! ;)

boltless@boltless.me

Sharing this! Wish I'm not late for #IETF126 Tangled found PDS doesn't fit well for contributions even with upcoming permissioned space spec. So, we are planning to store record-like data outside of PDS, in Knot. This is a post explaining the reasons & upstream spec change we need. #atproto #atdev

I read the new EU Court ruling on algorithms and social platforms so you don't have to. Turns out to be the most consequential thing a European court has said about recommendation algorithms, and also it just breaks when you apply it to the atmosphere connectedplaces.online/the-algorith...

connectedplaces.onlineThe Algorithm, SingularA new European ruling on algorithmic amplification determines if an operator controls how content spreads on a platform. But applying it to open social networks turns out to be a problem.

It is possible to have federation that keeps end users in control and doesn't allow 3rd party copying of your data without your consent. That's exactly what @peergos.org protocol does. There are of course tradeoffs but it is the right choice for user agency and democracy.
