Like yes the US has a large inefficient and extractive healthcare system, but education and healthcare is also the largest employment sector in the country AND it pays nearly triple on average that it does in a country with universal healthcare. It's extractive because it creates jobs.

What is it with progressive/leftist movements in the modern west and getting parasocially wedded to increasingly tired and ineffectual geriatric leaders?

This isn't completely wrong, but as a KC native the home I bought 10 years ago has more than doubled in value. My family is contemplating a move to a HCOL metro, and whereas a few years ago I would have blanched at home prices now there is not nearly as much of a difference.

East Germany has a Western European mentality on communism, with quite a lot of Ostalgie, rather than the Polish mentality that communism is basically the Holocaust, which no Pole collaborated with and if you say otherwise you'll go to prison.

We're seeing this in Berlin right now, with people trying to wash the idea of expropriation without compensation as an understandable solution to the housing crisis rather than as an atrocity as anti-constitutional as (say) American Republican anti-14th amendment birthright citizenship arguments.

The Western European mentality that communism is a nice ideal that every under-30 person with a heart should aspire to but just doesn't work in practice is worse than the Eastern European or American mentality that it is an inherently genocidal ideology whose adherents are inherently suspect.

I mean really I think the vibecession is mostly explained by the pandemic causing a psychological reference point in the past for what prices "should be" in a way that has not been the case for any event since WW2

For some reason, I'll always defend this place, and I love it because it's not trying to be some awful attempt at trying to replicate historic train station designs poorly. It's unashamedly modern, and it manages to pump trains through on multiple levels to the rest of the Bundesrepublik.

Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

There is a certain kind of socialist who is completely unwilling to accept that large sections of society value racism and notions of racial order more than they do their material prosperity

I've seen everyone sharing that US Dialect Quiz so I decided to make my own, much crappier, CANADIAN DIALECT QUIZ to guess where in Canada you're from

i've been thinking lately about how much giving someone a ride is the most underrated love language - picking up someone up from the airport, portaging children across town for soccer practice, whatever. It's implicitly a very loving and caring gesture to promise to get someone somewhere safely.

Just walked past this. Why would I want to hire people to carefully move my stuff if they can’t be bothered to make sure that their company name “In and Out Movers” is not accidentally rendered as “In Nut” on their logo?

Why is your Air Canada count so high? With that said, I’m twenty years older than you, and this is what my stats look like. Guess which airline I have status with? The answer might surprise you. :-)

As I've said countless times before, pickup trucks are in the weird zone where they're large V8 vehicles with some cargo space that don't come across as "douchy" when compared to a BMW or Mercedes. And unlike a Mustang, your kids can fit in the back.

"I DON'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING EXCEPT THE VROOM VROOM SOUND!" Everyone is twelve now theory holding strong

A sizable chunk of this market in the 1980s and even 1990s would have been driving large sedans and wagons with said V8s, or driving around in a two door personal coupe or muscle car with nobody asking questions about the kids in the rear seat.

The whole K1 visa is nuts. "You're coming get married within 90 days but not to immigrate but you'll adjust your status after you marry to become an immigrant but we won't process it within 90 days so you'll be here illegally but we won't count that as illegal and even let you work—unless we don't."

The National Nurses Union is very outspoken in support of single payer and I generally wonder what they think will happen to their member’s wages. In CA they make ~$110/hr at straight time rates with annual raises ~4-5%. Do they think that continues??
