If you're feeling tired, remember you've lived through the greatest global pandemic since 1918, and you're currently living through the end of the rules based social order and the stable climate that has sustained human civilisation for almost 12,000 years. It feels hard because it is.

Here's a novel idea, we could do more to build Northland's economy by investing into companies in Northland, supporting start ups, giving out science and innovation grants - just basically anything that would provide a better return than building a massive new state highway 70 km away

It blows my mind that America has the least efficient healthcare system in the world and our govt is busily trying to replicate it in NZ. The only winners from this are private healthcare and insurance companies - and we are 100% buying the bullshit they're slinging.

Jen Taub@jentaub.bsky.social

“A single-payer universal health care system could cover every American, save more than 100,000 lives a year, and still cost $1 trillion less than the system it would replace, according to a new preprint study led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health.” ysph.yale.edu/news-article...

Possibly, here's a novel idea, we could do more to build Northland's economy by investing into companies in Northland, supporting start ups, giving out science and innovation grants - just basically anything that would provide a better return than building a massive new state highway 70 km away.

Forest & Bird is backing the avatar moth – a tiny, beautiful, day-flying moth that lives only on the Denniston Plateau. It was discovered in 2012 and named after the film because its home – like Pandora – is under threat from a mining company.

Compensation for time & effort spent on unsuccessful bids? Nice! Gosh, *imagine* if arts funding worked this way, or science and research, or indeed any gig whatsoever? "So sorry you didn't get the role, but here's a bunch of cash for making it this far. Best wishes for your work going forward!✨🥰 "

"[The] ‘bid costs’ eligible for reimbursement in this context means the reasonable, actual and verifiable third-party external costs directly related to preparing specific elements of the bidder’s proposal."

I look at both National and Labour refusing to raise fuel taxes - both short-sighted in different ways. I just wonder if as well as struggling with the cost of living, New Zealanders just actually want the government to be adults, to confront difficult issues, to think about the future.

Love this article - great insight into the short term thinking that seems to permeate NZ politics right now.

“No new taxes” means our health system will collapse and public assets will be turned into profit centres for private operators. It’s happening now. Two of these reports would fund our social service community organisation for ONE WHOLE YEAR. Also, I’m quite good at excel so maybe I should do the next one?

Deloitte has been caught doing this multiple times in Australia and Canada because of the nonsense in the reports they produced. So why on earth did WCC decide paying $400k for a 13 page slide deck would be a good idea #nzpol #Wellington www.rnz.co.nz/news/regiona...

This story just sparked an insight for me. The type of work that Big 4 consultants do - writing high level reports with sweeping statements and broad recommendations - is perfectly suited to being done by AI. And all those reports saying AI will boost productivity are written by consultants

Mountain Tui@mountaintui.bsky.social

Wellington's Mayo says a $435,000 Deloitte report on Council staffing was largely written by artificial intelligence, double counted staff & relied on old employment data from the Taxpayers Union. It also overstated expenses by over ~$22m #Deloitte #kiwi

Whereas the actual nitty gritty of building things or delivering actual services to real people in the community, providing healthcare, education, making products. These are less easily outsourced to AI - For one thing, because it's immediately obvious when they go wrong.

It’s kinda tragic that confessing that you have to deliberately underpay 50% of the populace in order to reach your budgetary requirements isn’t a career-ending move #nzpol

The Dutch mobility system isn't just built around cycling. It's built around bike-train intermodality: cycling solves the train's convenience problem and the train solves cycling's range problem. Together, they offer an attractive alternative to driving on a mass scale. WATCH: youtu.be/jq93DgLvmFc

RNZ canvassing economists to pick over public transport subsidies literally (like actually literally) ONE THOUSAND TIMES SMALLER than a single RON.

Hey RNZ when you have finished chasing every conceivable edge case for this very cheap proposal, could spare some time to look at the massive $50+billion vast hole that is the govt’s transport policy?

It's wild how unusual it is to see consequences for a company actively choosing to install automated aesthetically-plausible lying software on top of its information retrieval service. This should be the god damn norm

London created a low emissions zone, cleaned up their air and literally saved hundreds and thousands of lives. We have normalised the cost of our car-dependent cities to the point we can't even see it anymore.

Incredible - dramatic improvements in air quality in London are linked to a measurable impact on Londoners' health: 9.3% drop in heart-related emergency admissions 5.1% drop in hospital admissions of all illnesses and health conditions Cleaning up our air protects our future.

London is actively combatting disinformation.

Disinformation about London is spreading globally, fuelling fear for politics and profit. We’re launching a major new campaign to challenge these misleading narratives head-on and set the record straight. www.standard.co.uk/news/london/...

This is REALLY important. The main thing that makes it hard to achieve integrated nature/green in cities ISN’T the density of buildings or the density of people — it's the density of CARS. And the better designed your density of people and buildings is, the fewer cars you need or want. #UrbanTruth

Time for me to repeat one of my ‘sayings’. If you try to solve a problem by passing a law, but people don’t obey the law, you now have two problems where you used to have one.
