"in Conservative Alberta it’s always Festivus, & the airing of grievances is always close at hand. Every time an argument is made on behalf of Canada, it has to begin with an almost ritualistic recitation of the various ways in which Canada has harmed & injured Albertans." shorturl.ly/ol2z3
Just learned I share a birthday with @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social — and we are both celebrating milestone birthdays (but he is younger and cooler than me). Happy birthday, Mr. Mayor!

Good article by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social on widespread acceptance - including by the police - of antisocial driving. Lovely to see a link to our recent motonormativity paper in here too www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I'm just SOOOOOO excited to have Chromatic Architecture reviewed by @rowanmoore.bsky.social in the @theobserveruk.bsky.social today 💥❤️ I do hope that the book will in some small way help bring more sensuous and delightful qualities back into our urban environments.

there's endless logistical, pragmatic, economic and moral reasons to support provisions of public transit, but at the end of the day, for me, a government that cares about its communities is one that's figured out how to offer you a ride when you need one, on terms that make the offer flattering

“At some point all people are dependent on accessible infrastructure: as toddlers, when suffering from a temporary injury, when pushing a stroller or carrying heavy loads, or as older people. We are particularly mobile in middle age—a time when our actions influence the mobility of others.”

In Montréal, what started as an emergency pandemic response has evolved into the continent’s most ambitious car-free scheme. Across 9.3 kilometres of 11 commercial arteries in seven boroughs, entire corridors have been handed back to pedestrians, helping some 2,100 businesses thrive in the process.🧵

Why weren’t bicycles invented sooner? “Why was no one…even considering the question of human-powered vehicles until the 1400s? Why weren’t there bicycle mechanics in the 1300s, when there were clockmakers, or at least by the 1500s, when we had watches?” [blog.rootsofprogress.org]

"In their seminal book Life After Cars, journalists Aaron Naparstek, Doug Gordon and Sarah Goodyear write that the noise, pollution, and epidemic of violent death brought to our streets by cars have become so ubiquitous that we no longer even notice them."

This is a triggering image of a museum display in the natural history museum in DC about life before smartphones. Me and a fellow 40+ person were laughing at how we are now LITERAL MUSEUM PIECES. MY teen was like did you have a clear phone? An address book? A book of maps. Yes, yes I did. 🫠🫠🫠

Cincinnati has developed a Climate Migration Readiness Plan to absorb as many as 525,000 newcomers by 2050. It calls for building much denser housing, expanding public transit and decreasing the city’s reliance on fossil fuels.

The mistakes we make now are not allowing cities to be cities, bogging down every decision with expensive long winded process and delay, limiting where it can happen, and still succumbing to the notion that it has to help suburbs
I think the conspiracy is comforting to people -- "a few bad guys did this." The reality -- "electeds, planners, and most of the public believed that the car was the future and rail transit was outdated" is actually more unsettling since it raises the question of what we're getting wrong now.

Great piece from Ilana Altman, CEO of @thebentway.bsky.social and makes a case for why a national built environment policy (called an architecture policy in other parts of the world) is needed; is @mark-carney.bsky.social listening? www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti... 1/
I was born the same year :) And, I’ve climbed the steps of the CN Tower, took me 21 minutes and 17 seconds. I was working in a gym at the time and had been semi-training but woke up late and had to jog to the base of the tower before the cut-off time. I’ll never forget how dreary it is inside.
On this day in 1976, the CN Tower opened to the public. The exterior lights were activated by seven-foot-tall Roger Tickner and six-foot-three tall Paula Lishman. 📸 Dillan Payne Learn more in my Deep Dive 👇 buff.ly/IIngzJw
I love this thread for (coining?) a phrase in its conclusion: “political intolerance for mediocre” Too much of our public investment focuses on price, not value. Cheap stuff sucks (the life out of a place). A little public pride, please? We deserve nice things.
