There are a lot of web-based RSS reader options out there (or readers with good multi-platform support) if that fits your needs. Re: aggregator sites, try Flipboard.

Yes to RSS! 🙌 I've published on wordpress for 15 years (so the notification I got the other day tells me) happily riding out all of the algo-storms

This is also a great way to follow newsletters without your email inbox getting jammed up. I mostly subscribe to newsletters, turn the emails off, and then read them in my feed reader.

Most newsletters provide an RSS feed, or there are some RSS readers that will let you send emails to a special email address so they show up in your feed.

Lately I've been thinking about the best way to do a modern webring geared specifically towards indie newsletters that are distributed via Ghost, Buttondown etc. I love blogrolls and 88x31 buttons but those aren't newsletter-centric... Maybe a meta-letter with excerpts from each member? Spitballin!

Add me to the people endorsing Inoreader. I used their free tier for years and then ponied up for paid because the features were worth it. If you’re on a Mac/iPhone/iPad NetNewsWire is an awesome app as well.

Would someone post a screenshot on how this typically looks? I like the idea of having my own rss feed, but at the same time I'm uncertain how chronological would work, since I want to see the most important news first same as reading a newspaper (I don't know much about it, just in case)

this is how mine looks. if you’re not looking for a chronological feed, some feed readers do have options to try to show you what they think will be most relevant based on your reading habits.

Still contend that Google Reader being shutdown was one of those moments you can look back on and say that "things changed". RSS was never the same after that. But I always include RSS in my blog.

I've been using Feedly ever since Google Reader shut down, but I'd really prefer to use something self hosted, are there any particularly good open source options these days?

I've used both TinyTiny RSS and FreshRSS. FreshRSS is now my reader of choice, self-hosted on my own harsware using a Cloudflare ZeroTrust tunnel.

I would also suggest it is a great way to practice reading foreign languages and improve vocabulary and grammar. You can find blogs on so many topics in many common languages. Though if you are starting out, I’d recommend a topic you are familiar with as it makes it much easier.
