What he said. Also: Just like parents tell their kids to say "thank you" in hopes the kids develop gratitude, I wonder if Anthropic hopes users forced to be nice to LLMs will develop empathy for them and care for them like people. I felt crazy typing that, but... [gestures around at San Francisco]

Brandon Downey@bdowney.bsky.social

Folks, I know a lot of well-intentioned people think that being mean to your tools is some sort of vice. I'd like to table that because that's not what Anthropic is talking about here. They think Claude is a real person, and this belief seems delusional to me.

Hmm, if true, I'd expect Kaiser to not see this increase. We'll see what Obamacare insurance rates for next year look like I guess? Or are the insurance companies just rejecting more claims now?

I think this analysis is overstating the claims a bit, but nevertheless, an interesting case study of how increased productivity can result in higher costs: www.reuters.com/legal/litiga...

As someone who reported on cybersecurity for a decade, reporters not focused on cybersecurity are very bad at reporting on cybersecurity.

over the past few weeks several AI evaluation/cybersecurity experts have explained how what's happening is a result of human incompetence rather than "AI going rogue". I'm begging the media to show a shred of journalistic integrity and stop parroting what altman or amodei say

LLMs aren't made of neurology except in the most handwavey sense. They're made of narrative. That's why I started calling them text elementals: they're not human, they're most-likely-text generators we bent into living stories in a prose format centering the characters User and Assistant

model misalignment is a weird way to spell can't sandbox an experiment properly.

Since AI safety is still a topic, Manoj's (first) plan: 1. Pass and enforce strong civil and criminal penalties on companies for what their automations do, even through contractors. 2. Make the C-suite personally liable for actions triggered through machine-learning systems (Sarbanes-Oxley style).

A good and somewhat wonky post on just some of the predictions of the wild AI optimists+pessimists (who are sometimes both), what they already got wrong (which we saw coming), and what they're likely still getting wrong. As usual, be suspicious of "This time is different".

Last time the Fed hiked before an election? 2022 midterm under Biden. From 1984 to 2024, the Fed adjusted rates (up or down) within 60 days of an election (43%) as often as in any other 60-day period (45%).

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Hassett threatens Warsh: "I'd be wary of a rake hike. The Fed has had hiked rates ahead of an election only a couple times all the way back to 1913. So I think if you want an independent Fed, one thing the Fed does is stay out of the way of elections."

for a banal example, the fact that anthropic will simultaneously publish long diatribes about the risks of AI surveillance and then contract out Claude for Palantir to resell to CBP is psychotic, and there is no reason why i should take any of their moral protests seriously while they do that.

How would you feel if it’s likely that an $8 billion bond measure is chiefly benefiting one nonprofit, and that nonprofit’s major donor is also a top funder of the effort to pass the bond? I spent weeks on this story connecting the many seeming dots surrounding Proposition 38.

I watched an awful Netflix social media "documentary" a few years ago with a graph of suicides clearly rising from ~ 2007. But they drew a vertical line through 2009 to claim social media as the cause, as if social media was the only thing happening then.
