I know I'm a broken record on this, but one part of what is going on is that people have literally no idea what the US immigration system actually is; effectively, that there are no pathways into the country legally for someone who wants to wait in line.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

New Marist poll of Texas finds 61% say undocumented immigrants should stay in US if meet certain requirements. Only 35% say they should leave. A majority of noncollege white men (Trump base) says stay. Supports my case (see piece/thread below) that Trump opened way for new pro-immigrant consensus

my take on this remains consistent: far more americans are bigoted on this front than I'd like, but transphobia is a luxury belief it's the kind of thing you can get people mad about if and only if they don't have real problems to worry about, and there is no shortage of real problems right now

gwen howerton@kissphoria.bsky.social

Fascinating tidbit in this interview with former Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont), he says that Texas Republicans anti-transgender ads aren't "resonating." It got papered over way too quick because the GOP won in 2024 but the brain drain happening in the party infrastructure is very real Yea it’s bad a handful of billionaires can single handily bankroll a party but at best their money is worth ¢.6 on the dollar or worse they air ads in the wrong state

The funniest/saddest reaction to this amazing article has been people going "wait, Stellaris has WRITERS?" Yes folks, if a game has words... someone probably got paid to write them... even if that game isn't an RPG or a visual novel...

All prisoners should have the right to vote while in prison

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

Arguably the biggest democracy referendum next month: Virginia is one of only three states where the state constitution says people should lose their right to vote FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE if they are convicted of any felony. This measure would allow anyone to vote after prison.

Will is obviously smart and has made many excellent arguments in his time, but if Republican appointees appoint conservatives to amicus roles like this all the time and Democratic appointees do the same to show they're getting ~balanced arguments~, when do liberals get appointed?

Jon Seidel@jonseidel.bsky.social

To maintain an adversarial process, and because the former defendants are no longer involved, Perry has named William Baude of the University of Chicago to act as amicus and provide an opposing position: www.law.uchicago.edu/faculty/baude

The GOP is an opposition party even when it's in power, the idea that they are the perpetual underdog is central to their internal mythology and can't be disturbed by facts or the results of elections. It's also why they're bad at, you know, governing.

I really would love it if Democrats would spend more time saying “if Trump tells you to do a crime it is still a crime and we will do our best to have you punished for it”

New: The Trump administration has spent more than $1M in public funds so far to boost the president on the airwaves. Experts including a Bush WH ethics lawyer said it likely violates federal laws against propaganda & political activity by gov’t staff. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/27/u...

"Normative appeals to civility and harmony, when applied indiscriminately, can obscure the moral distinction between domination and resistance—condemning confrontational opposition even in contexts where democratic survival or basic human dignity is at stake." 🎯

This strikes me is a common misunderstanding of the argument for humanities education, which is not that it serves as some sort of individual inoculation, but rather than it produces a citizenry more capable of self-governance when distributed widely, especially for decision-makers of every kind.

bigfresh.bsky.social@bigfresh.bsky.social

Humanities education doesn't inoculate people against doing evil and the engineers of the past weren't ignorant of what their work was used for.

what I learned in the doc was that she didn’t plan on getting pregnant with 8 kids. she wanted one more. her doctor implanted 6 embryos, said they didn’t take, had her agree to implant 6 more while still sedated, and that’s how she ended up with 8. it’s heartbreaking to hear her initial reaction.
