freedom of speech ≠ speech without consequences

the thing about the “town square” analogy as it pertains to social media is that it actually does work. it’s just that “town square” meaning “saying anything to anyone without repercussions” is ridiculous. try going up to a stranger in public and saying something weird and see what happens.

Your location data isn’t just a pin on a map. It can reveal where you work, worship, protest, or seek healthcare—and it’s being harvested, sold, and weaponized. Lawmakers must act now to protect our privacy.

"Age verification" laws are actually "upload your ID or get your face scanned to access every website, ending anonymity and associating your identity with everything you do online" laws and if more people understood that they would not be down for this authoritarian nonsense

Why don’t we have edits? How might we implement edits? @verdverm.com dives in and shows one way we can get to edits. He’ll also be at #ATmosphereConf if you want to jam on the nuances of editing in person.

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

i mean, the president's executive order isn't a goddamn law! as far as this doctor is concerned, who cares what the president says!

Et tu, Apple?

"Gulf of America" is just a loyalty test. It's a way of checking who is going to abrogate reality for no reason other than a cowardly refusal to stand up to the bully or an opportunistic willingness to toady up to one. Anyone who will call it that will help you round people up or look the other way.

In my use so far, there is not one single good and useful thing about Apple Intelligence

Geoffrey A. Fowler@geoffreyfowler.bsky.social

This is my periodic rant that Apple Intelligence is so bad that today it got every fact wrong its AI a summary of @washingtonpost.com news alerts. It's wildly irresponsible that Apple doesn't turn off summaries for news apps until it gets a bit better at this AI thing.

The best bit about these Meta AI accounts is they were announced last year and we all yawned because they were stupid and no one used them, and then a year later, furious at the content slop Meta's eager to unleash, people finally used them--but just to call out how much they hate them.

I hate doing "how to get a job in tech" type content, but I'm so tired of the awful advice I've been seeing. Finally took the time to make an updated jobs video, I hope this one can help some people out 🫡 youtu.be/2PiM2e4RtTg

dear apple card, maybe there’s a reason no other credit card i’ve ever had randomly changes my card number without me asking. that’s cool and all, but maybe don’t do that if you’re not also going to move over all of my subscriptions and automatically paid bills to the new number.
