…there were 42 words. For one particular drawing, 45% picked the same word. For three others, the percentages were 40%. … this is significantly more overlap than one could expect… there must therefore be certain regularities "which the human soul follows in the process of name-giving".

Uhhhh... This was a language study. If presented with the words bouba and kiki, as well as a spike image and a round image people would call the round image bouba and the spike image kiki. This applies to people from many languages. So comic says cold is kiki. Ok now please look at my dog.

I believe water does transotion at 0°c but it is one of the few material most dense in liquid state because it's crystalized form takes more space than a slightly disorganized liquid form, and this is why we can slide on ice ! As we put pressure on it it melts while most materials tend to solidify

And the ice floats over water because it's less dense. If ice sinks in water (as almost all other material) all seas would be ice to the bottom and life as we know wouldn't exist on earth.

There was a psychology experiment testing if language was totally learned or did some sounds/words have innate meaning. The made up words they used were "bobo" and "Kiki". It turns out they do have innate meaning!

> 0º, it can have 2 phases, liquid and gas, <0º, only 1. I feel cheated. It seems like <-100º, there should be another phase kicking in. Maybe it becomes oh, I don't know. Colorful. Or 6-sided prisms. Something more interesting.

I appreciate the comic, but I must say I belong to the small minority for whom the effect doesn't work. In fact, I called the spiky form "bouba", because it was suggestive of an explosion. No talent for synaesthesia, obviously.

We had a conversation about the viscosity of water as it gets colder and but before it freezes. This was relative to moving it under pressure through piping. Is this a principle or effect?

Basically, bouba and kiki is about how people who speak completely different languages will still call a curvy shape "bouba" and a pointy shape "kiki". Like, "bouba" just feels like it should be blobby and round, and "kiki" just feels like it should be spiky.

note discrepancies may arise at the upper or lower boundaries of kiki and bouba, for example a lightning strike is still very kiki despite being charged with high energy and temperature. Conversely,

This is true at atmospheric pressures. If you start changing the pressure, these numbers change. Fun fact: at the right temp and pressure (I think it's 0 atm and 0 celcius) water will try to be a solid, liquid and a gas, all at the same time

You've got lots of company in that boat. Maybe I'm undergoing a phase transition to "baffled curmudgeon" but it seems like modern XKCD is just inside baseball for Ph.D. candidates. Remember the Journal arc? Remember the Secretary of the Internet? Good stuff.

Except the bouba/kiki effect isn't a short lived meme. It's been studied (first as baluba/takete) since the 60s. And as long as there are linguists it will exist. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Huh. Kinda makes me wonder if you really understand it. Because there is all sorts of fascinating research stemming the effect. It isn't just a silly meme, it is a legitimate area of research.

Had project in construction during cold winter & tubular steel column didn’t have drainage holes at base. It filled with rain & then froze solid-we noticed when welded plates literally bulged out & full pen welds ripped open. The 9% volume expansion from Bouba to Kiki should be Kickass!

they may be called snowballs, but each particle is not really that smooth its like a shape that aaaaalmost looks like a circle but its actually a ton of smaller edges that together look like a circle from a distance except its a bunch of kiki-like snow particles that together look like a bouba shape

Freezer we acquired is a professional 2 door standing stays at -6 degrees most of time. Defrosts at 0 degrees. Returns back to -6 within 2 minutes. Purchased $1,900 Kitchen equipment should always be best option available. Food storage if improperly stored can kill.

I didn't understand the comic and I didn't understand this post. Later in the replies I found the information I needed to understand the comic and hence understand this post and I made sure to come back to heart this!
