I'd like to say I planned this quote but, honestly, it was completely off the cuff. Whole article is a great read www.theguardian.com/environment/...
...only certain instruments—an infrared and visible imaging instrument and a hyperspectral infrared sounder. No lightning I keep coming back to this because the (not studied) best predictor of future lightning in my experience is previously seen lightning from GLM www.congress.gov/crs-product/...
NOAA's satellite programs have certainly dealt with issues over the years but scientifically brought massive benefits. GAO reported last week on concerns about the geostationary program going forward, including coverage gaps and loss of lightning mapping. balancedweather.substack.com/p/government...

Story from KOAT-TV in ABQ about the northern NM flooding. Amazed this is not getting more national coverage. www.koat.com/article/new-...
After weeks of periodic heavy rains, the San Juan River system in CO and NM is in the middle of a truly historic flood that appears to be causing catastrophic impacts to the rural Four Corners region — the word needs to get out on how bad things are: balancedweather.substack.com/p/record-cat...

One thing that I think we do tend to forget, though, as a person who does believe in data, is that this is official on-the-books data. One of the ongoing pressures that is very hard to measure is everything getting more digitized means less fraudulent activity.
"Doesnt inflation spike as well?" Sure, but we can of course look at real wages (that is, wages after adjusting for inflation) and confirm that the "vibecession" occured during an increase in real earnings, especially for the bottom quartile of earners.

Lol. Not sure who needs to hear this, but the federal government has no standing to prevent a state from certifying their election results. Also, this is the type of PR stunt you pull when you think you are going to lose.
JUST IN: The Trump administration has preemptively filed a lawsuit seeking to block certification of Alaska's US Senate election if the Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan loses in the state which could decide the balance of power in the Senate. https://cnn.it/4eqk8HA

Spouse and I got lost in Rome on New Years Eve and were walking, and walking, and walking, trying to find the river because we knew we could follow it back to our hotel near the Vatican. Then we saw this and thought, "Frick, we are REALLY lost."
Building pyramids was apparently a bit of a trend for ancient Roman elites:

the thing about being a semi-public figure on the internet and also a principled harm reductionist is that i try to be very responsibly cognizant of when and how i talk on here about substance use, but sometimes i laugh thinking about posting some shit like "anyone abuse any good stimulants lately?"
