I was accused of being an AI shill today, which is fun, so I'd like to clarify something while giving credit. My avatar (both Tigers cap and Santa hat version) is not AI-generated. It was commissioned from @reverentgeek.com, who does great work. He is not, as best I can tell, a robot.

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Compared to the crypto companies, Bezos, etc. it seems like Apple has gotten a lot more grace from the public during Trump 2. Seems like maybe we should reconsider.

My daughter did her first lockdown drill at 4. Her TK teacher, who was by the way an incredible teacher, told them they were hiding from robbers, and that if the robbers ever got in, they should stay hidden while he tried to fight them off. A part of me will always be thinking about that.

Concluding the meeting with the American delegation in the US two days ago, after receiving a tirade of threats from Trump officials, Ukraine's Budanov turned when leaving and said, "We are now going to burn every last Russian refinery and every last port to hell. It’s simply unimaginable that CDC Director Dr. Erica Schwartz has just bowed to RFK Jr. and approved funding for an utterly unethical clinical trial that will withhold the birth dose of HepB vaccine in Guinea Bissau. It is to be conducted by researchers accused of academic misconduct.

This is very true. A huge theme in a lot of recent coverage that AI is a bit like Saving Private Ryan. Everybody's gotta step up and adopt AI to get it across the goal line.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

This is the Dot Com Bubble 2.0, just way more consolidated & bigger. There's no way these AI companies live up to the hype to even close to the degree they'd need to for this to not be a disaster.

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP. Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down. "AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago. We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.

This is so unsurprising that the NY Times miscounted the number of Trump press secretaries to join Fox News. Leavitt makes 3, not 2: Kayleigh McEnany is a current host, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders was a Fox contributor between the end of her WH tenure in 2019 and her 2021 run for Arkansas gov.

Justin Baragona@justinbaragona.bsky.social

This might be the least surprising news of the day. Leavitt has been on Fox repeatedly since leaving the White House and Hannity has constantly joked about her having her own show. Plus, as we all know, there's a revolving door between the Trump admin and Fox News. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/b...

What I don't understand is being -that rich- and getting busted in a prostitution sting in a trailer park in Ohio. High-class escorts are a thing, right? I can't imagine at that level it's hard to fulfill whatever weird needs Jed York has.

Question - Did Trump, strategic mastermind, manage to completely bottom out right before the mid-term, or is the mid-term just happening somewhere on the slope to the bottom? Given tribalism it's hard to think that the floor could be far below where things stand.

Dear Silicon Valley cultists: no, I’m not getting paid by a shadowy they/them cabal to be mean to you. I’m being mean to you because your sicko culture has helped destroy mainstream international aid funding (which is killing people), usher in Trump 2.0, and pervert technology and innovation.

Am I missing something? The tone around these 'AI LSD sex parties' is 'might be problematic toward women and employees'. Y'all I don't see how this is any different or more acceptable than Clinton & Lewinsky or the like. The employer/employee power imbalance means that consent is under pressure.

Consent given under that kind of pressure isn't consent. How are we not framing this as sexual assault? Sure, AI tech overlords are in a crazed sex cult is bad on it's own, but an industry rife with sexual assault and consent under pressure is incredibly awful all on its own.

John's shared this viewpoint a few times, and I appreciate the viewpoint but I think it misses a broader point - why not both? As a dad, I help my kids explore and find their interests and of course that includes things I love like sci-fi and fantasy. They make their path, but I help them find it.

The other thing is that I was born in the 80's - a lot of these works were dated when I read them as a kid! I still enjoyed them along with the latest Terry Brooks novel that came out the week before. They're just as capable of that.

All to say - I don't think John's take is wrong, we shouldn't give our kids only the old words, but I think avoiding those works wholesale is also a mistake! I want my kids to have the whole universe at their fingertips.

I don't push 'the old words' on them, but they loved Rendezvous with Rama and have listened to the audiobook 2 or 3 times now. Further back they loved The Hobbit and have enjoyed nighttime reading from LotR for a long time. My daughter especially loves Garth Nix' female protagonists.

They also have stacks of young reader sci-fi/fantasy (mostly about dragons and cats) that are much more modern and that they also really enjoy. It's a whole beautiful world of literature, and while I wouldn't exclusively put older works in front of them, why wouldn't I want to share them alongside?
