Is Liberalism alive? A response to Dr Roz Savage’s pamphlet Roz Savage's new Compass pamphlet is a step forward in spelling out a 21st century liberal vision for the UK. But her wariness of being seen as left wing means she hedges when more clarity is needed.

This is probably the best ad I've seen against using generative AI: Mayer, who was an engineer at Google and a chief executive of Yahoo, has rotted her brain so much she can no longer classify her daughter as "empathetic, creative and an animal lover". The slide of competence is incredible.

Why are the people who accuse those talking about reversing Brexit of "living in the past" never asked about their own plans to rip up an international agreement that was first signed by the UK some 75 years ago?

Finally got this out of my system. Early feedback so far has been that I’m variously nitpicking over language or shouldn’t scare the horses by suggesting that liberal socialism is not the bad thing that @rozsavage.bsky.social suggests.

Maybe expecting the Lib Dems to get over their fear of being seen as socialist or leftwing is futile, but if those are the only arguments against, I rest my case. You don’t get healthy individuals without healthy societies and putting either first is a misstep.

Frankly I’m more interested my more substantive point, calling for supporters of more radical devolution to go further and question why so few people get involved in communities, and look at reducing the barriers that prevent people from doing so.

Don’t give them an inch.

What is the BBC's justification for maintaining this level of coverage of Reform now it has slipped into third place?

BBC News just interrupted its coverage to go, live, to Nigel Farage - a man with no contitutional standing in our setup - responding to the budget - a document which nobody has seen yet. WHY

Exactly right. It's why the idea of "UK PLC" was so grotesque - as if a nation was just a limited company, that could be wound up, taken over, merged or dissolved, with no roots in the past and no responsibility to the future.

Politicians should look at the UK economy as a CEO would, says Lloyds Bank CEO From a bank that hasn't investigated HBOS frauds. No thank you. Companies enrich shareholders. Countries have entirely different purpose, governance, accountability. Must not be treated as corporations. archive.ph/lj45s

💯The case for democracy is not that voters are always right, or wise, or good. It's that they can correct their mistakes. That's why it's so dangerous to have billionaires controlling the media or regulating the flow of information. It shuts down the immune system of democracy.

Rob Ford@robfordmancs.bsky.social

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

While the election result in #Brazil is obviously good news, we should remember that countless American wannabe-fascists poured $billions into achieving the opposite result and now have nothing to show for it, so it's not just good news, but also objectively hilarious.

Anyone who’s had this will tell you the same story and it is IMO important to understand the terror of transgender people as sex offenders is much the same thing as black-clad lads in the street shouting against migrants as sex offenders. They are different facets of the same reactionary project.

The scheduling demons deploy their twice yearly bullshit to throw off your gaming plans. Don't let them win! Clocks went back last night in European timezones. This makes time differences wobbly for a while. Always try to use unicodes (like hammer.time or Discords @time function) to avoid mix ups!

Elrond tells the long story of the One Ring, from its forging in the Mountain of Fire, to its betrayal of Isildur at the Gladden Fields. Frodo is startled to learn that Elrond himself marched with Gil-Galad in the Last Alliance against Sauron, more than three thousand years ago.

Watching CNN for some reason and they have reminded me that US Have I Got News For You exists. I’m not the biggest fan of UK HIGNFY but the US version is possibly a war crime.

Nazism is* Marxism when you replace “class” with “nation”, at which point it is by definition no longer socialism. But early C20 socialism has a lot in common with fascism, see Things to Come, written by a Fabian who rejected Marxism-Leninism, in which jackbooted blackshirts save the world.

Dorian Lynskey@dorianlynskey.bsky.social

I hate this dumbo critique for obvious reasons but also because there was in fact a connection between early fascism and socialism that doesn't fit into a post so the rebuttals are simplistic too. The truth is weirder and more revealing about how people slide from one camp to another

i've said this before, but modern centrists have never understood what the argument against them even is they see analysis based on the frequently-referenced, well-evidenced, two decades old idea that politics is symbolically gendered & they're just like "woah, what on earth is this"
