What is the BBC's justification for maintaining this level of coverage of Reform now it has slipped into third place?

Alex Andreou@sturdyalex.bsky.social

BBC News just interrupted its coverage to go, live, to Nigel Farage - a man with no contitutional standing in our setup - responding to the budget - a document which nobody has seen yet. WHY

as an outsider looking in....I've noticed same for quite a while. johnson, gove & rees mogg got a huge amount of airtime and soft interviews a few years ago. now they don't even try to hide their bias.

Here's BBC News At 10 declaring to the nation that Reform UK promise to slash benefits by £50b if they are elected. The public need to demand an apology on BBC News at 10 during the week and identifying who was responsible for signing off on the piece. It's scandalous. 1/2

Reform are facing legal jeopardies. Their polling is tanking. Who is being paid off to direct that these non-issues are covered by #BBCNews?

It was a huge frustration for us during the Referendum period. I had friends who refused to query the BBC's position and bias, just because "it's the BBC - it must be right".

yep. the bias was so obvious and Farage got so used to it..he got a bit of a shock when he tried the same anti EU patter on Irish tv, in front of a professional journalist.👇 bsky.app/profile/gyle...

Ireland voted NO for the Lisbon Treaty in the 1990s. The Irish gov said "hold on. this is a massive mistake, let's do this again, properly". Turns out brexity rhetoric about an EU army & neutrality worried Irish voters. Here's Farage schooled on same. (Spoiler: We went again & voted YES) 3/9

Reform's support was shown to be bolstered by bots, and the BBC used that 'support' as justification for platforming Reform over and above the Lib Dems and Greens who had more MPs. It seems they have learned nothing, or we were being told a load of guff.

There is none! No justification whatsoever. Yet we who fund the BBC are simply powerless to demand they stop doing this and report more balanced.

As an editorial decision, promoting a particular political party like this on our public broadcaster should be a sackable offence. If it's not a sackable offence, then it's a failure of governance and that failure of governance should itself be a sackable offence.

Farage and Tice know that after the budget speech they won't get a look-in. That explains why they have 'responded' two days before the event. But it does not explain why the BBC gave them airtime.

Surely we know that the BBC is the mouthpiece of the Epstein Class? They're worried about all the approaching upheaval and they've decided that Authoritarian/Fascist government best serves their purpose. They are few, we are many.

The justification hasn't changed, even as they acknowledge that Reform has slipped (see this morning's intro to their fantasy budget on R4 Today this morning)

When it comes to their favourites, like Farage and his minions, or "Elon", the BBC behaves less like an established, objective news organisation and more like a gushing, paid-for influencer.

The Beeb news isn't going to win back viewers from GBeebies they're too far gone, brainwashed & twisted that they believe the mainstream media is lefty propaganda. This is what I was told by my in-law.

I try to avoid watching BBC "News" as we all know that they've lost any credibility when it comes to being impartial. Johnson's super-soft questioning leading up to the 2019 election was nonsensical. Now, the most unpopular leader is getting the equivalent of Trump/Fox "news" treatment 😒

They have a duty to maintain proper balance. Reform has no talent, no viable policies and no credibility. How are they supposed to balance that other through saturation coverage?

??? Perhaps the decision makers at the BBC think that fermenting Ignorance and racist chaos will bring them some kind of opportunity or personal reward? A less educated, uninformed population is easier to control? It’s quite unfathomable.

They were represented on PoliticsLive at lunchtime too. There is absolutely no justification for the BBC doing this while totally ignoring Greens and LibDems. I think even Restore is reported on more than the LibDems

Quite. Lib Dems never got this sort of coverage for the large periods when they were in that very position. This is an organisation *explicitly set up and funded* so that it never has to chase sensationalism, chasing sensationalism, in order to justify how it is set up and funded. Utterly bonkers.

Honestly not sure what the BBC's justification was back when they looked like a frighteningly-serious contender for the next GE, really. Farage transparently deliberately timing announcements and speeches to interrupt important political events should never have been rewarded.

Brazil have moved on Bolsonaro’s son. He is corrupt also. This is what the UK should be doing. And adjust the requirements for office. Having an entertainment slot and neglecting the day job as example - this is the Westminster stuff to clamp down on.

Maybe they are attempting to show blatant pro-right wing bias as part of their defence against Trump's legal action?

They also had Tice giving Reform's Budget rant on R4 Today but made no mention of hearing from the other parties with more MPs. There are more independents than Reform MPs.

They've only got a handful of MPs, they're in third place and still heading south, they are led by the most unpopular party leader in the country, yet they're still being treated as if they're somehow knocking on the gates of Downing Street

No experience of national governing (unless you include the Tory turncoats with a track record of failure) and a hopeless squad of local authority councillors getting smaller every day as their crimes & misdemeanors are exposed. Give me strength!

Either the staff of the BBCNews are all fascists, or they all snivelling cowards being bullied into delivering this Reform propaganda by the BBCNews board which is demonstrably controlled by far right place men.

As soon as I see anyone linked to Reform making an appearance on BBC News/QT/Kuenssberg etc, etc I immediately have to switch off. These goons are a damaging to our democracy and society as a whole. They should be treated as a national security threat that is intent on stoking up hate and division.

This was on the dedicated BBCNews channel which has 68,000 viewers a day. I can only imagine a few thousands people would have watched that feed.

Agreed, this was complete tripe today. Everyone should contact the BBC and say we don’t pay our license fee to listen to that whiny old bastard promoting himself by lying and making everyone else miserable. Stop it! let’s have some real world balance, not just this crap that’s pumped out by reform

This is how Trump became president. As an ex-journalist, let me admit that journalists like covering the Trumps and Farages. They make good copy. But it is bad for our society and bad for our democracy.

Easy! Their position is it should be second place and then first. The BBC is run by a Google guy. Ask yourself if you trust YouTube ads and then have a sensible conversation about the BBC (you can't)

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Nigel Farage fumes at ‘staff incompetence’ for half-empty Reform event He said: “As for this hall, well, staff incompetence” “It’s all well and good advertising to businesses but, on Mondays, people who run businesses tend to be rather busy.” www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/nig...

Tbf I think a 24 hour news chanel would probably cover a similar Ed Davy speech at a random time during the day assuming no other big news happening. What else it going to do?

Wasn't It was rolling 24 hour news it interrupted? A person behind a desk reading the same bits of news every 30 mins? It wasn't David Attenborough. And it was presumably planned to go live when it stated. This was news 24 not bbc 1.

Farage gave a view on the budget, when the budget hadn't actually been revealed. That's not News. That's Farage jumping up and down saying "Look at me! Look at me!" And the BBC giving him the airspace to do it. Did they ever do the same for Ed Davey, or Zack Polanski, or even Kemi Badenoch? No.

The only "person" given more air time by the BBC is Trump himself usually live and usually on the pretext of some particular topic of interest but ofc we are forced to listen to the same despicable ramblings that have been rammed down our throats on multiple occasions already.

Empty vessels make the most noise. The BBC has got itself into a right mess with their blatant support for ReformUK, as their preferred favourite (the Tories) looked to be a spent rocket. Now the bosses don’t know what to do. Maybe time for a change at the top and a change towards no bias?

Time for the licence fee to be scrapped and the BBC made to compete in the world of broadcasting as it now has evolved. Despite the talking heads from news reporting decades ago. The BBC are no longer the go to broadcaster anymore.

I wouldn’t mind, but there’s never any analysis of Reform’s policies. It’s always presented as “this is what Reform would do”. Done deal. The end. The BBC has become a shadow of its former self.

Third place is relative. Sadly, they still have massive support. The Beeb doesn’t have much choice. It is not their place to ignore a political party that had millions of votes last time, just because you and I don’t like them

The BBC is the voice of the establishment, not the people. The BBC's default position is to give airtime to people from the establishment, even if they are self-serving, self-centred, right-wing, racist, grifting buffoons.

BBC Today devoted its 08:10 interview slot this morning to Richard Tice, who spouted all the expected rubbish about immigrants, cutting welfare, etc. It's the first time I'd turned the radio on at that time in many months, only to find the BBC is still platforming these extremists. I turned it off.

I'm torn between fury at the exposure these charlatans get on the BBC and hope that the more exposure these charlatans get the more people will turn away from them

What the actual f*ck, I complained to the BBC about their constant coverage of Reform and their excuse was they were leading in the polls. That was it. People need to get an answer out of them again. There is f*ck all excuse for this.

#bbcnews is corrupt, it was complicit in Brexit, in the rise of Farage and Reform.....where is the culture secretary and why isn;t anything been done to address this tax payer paid broadcasted news

Could you and @sturdyalex.bsky.social please put these questions directly to the BBC (and Lisa Nandy), since neither take any notice whatsoever of complaints from the general public. This blatant bias is utterly unacceptable from *any* news org, especially the publicly funded national broadcaster.

A mention of Burnham's comment about a conversation about free movement on Radio 5 was instantly followed by a scathing response by Jenricks. No reason for it beyond simple bias.

Perhaps the most underrated and important post I’ve ever read about news coverage is this one, in which the BBC openly justifies its extensive coverage of Reform based on its position in the opinion polls. bsky.app/profile/simu...

Simunch@simunch1.bsky.social

The BBC have referred to Farage as an MP since he announced his intention to hold a by election in Clacton and Reeves appointed him as Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead on Wednesday, 8 July. He hasn't been an MP since then. Complaints have got this poor stock response. #ToriesGone769

This is the very same BBC which has editorial guidelines AGAINST commissioning or leading news stories using opinion polling figures. Yet somehow they let opinion polls set the news agenda when it comes to reporting on Reform.

Robbie Gibb getting desperate maybe? His joint "mission" to get NF into No 10 and destroy the "impartial" national broadcaster from within is not quite going to plan. Mind you, that won't stop him hammering away at Labour and promoting bestie Nigel Farage. BBC "behind the curve." Other RW rags...

what do you mean? they are literally doing their job it's just not what many of us believe it should be and the actual question is: how the f can we ever clean up all this mess

That's easy. They no longer measure their success on quality, it's now all about clicks and views, so the more sensational, the more they think their are succeeding. Until that changes, BBC are leading the race to the bottom. Ultimately, Matt Brittin is responsible.
