I have a long-held desire to go to Costco in a foreign country whenever the next time I travel. Costco is a place of wonders, so what must a Costco in a civilized country be like? Costco Canada? Costco Japan? I must know

Solomon@solomonrmissouri.com

“Costco is a cult “ A cult of livable wages and surprising deals Sign me TF up!!!

So was he working for free? Or where was this bro collecting income from during that time period?

NEW: The DOGE operative who gutted USAID -- firing thousands of employees and canceling lifesaving programs -- never actually signed the paperwork that's legally required for him to be employed by the agency.

Picturing the Venn diagram between "hates excellence" and "hates Black excellence"

Melissa@yournerdyfriend.bsky.social

And we obviously should never downplay the level of blatant, overtly hateful, racism Obama had to face. But I think it is also part of a broad trend of social resentment toward excellence. Anti-intellectualism and culminating in science denial is an another example.

"I'm being uncharacteristically direct", I say to myself, as a centering mantra, every morning

Tressie McMillan Cottom@tressiemcphd.bsky.social

I’m being uncharacteristically direct. I usually like to let people drink the water themselves. But I’m overstimulated, everybody is annoying, and the world is getting on my last good nerve.

Nah, this can f right off "[...] agents used this timing difference to communicate. One agent encoded information by evicting selected data from the cache. Another timed how long it took to reload that data, using the difference between fast and slow reads to recover the message."

mr. TIM@timkellogg.me

OpenAI constructed an entire shadow internet for model training so they could remove all internet access they asked agents to try to communicate with each other, and they could: via the CPU cache 🤯 openai.com/index/securi...

Had several instances lately where coworkers want long-running, unsupervised LLMs on containers. Have been insisting no, MicroVMs bare minimum acceptable paranoia. Now agents are basically turning the Spectre CPU cache info leak, string and bubblegum into some awful MacGyver walky talky?!

Men tend to think their physical appearance is a MUCH bigger deal to women than they actually are. In my experience, women aren’t NEARLY as shallow when it comes to personal attractions. Most incel losers think they’re too ugly for women to like them. It’s that loser mindset that SHINES through.

needless to say, the fact that the president is personally participating in *heavy sigh* generative animal snuff content at a time when his secretary of *heavier sigh* war is threatening to livestream an execution presents a more pressing and specific issue... but the moral rot runs super deep here

If your democracy cannot handle the cold reality voters have pancake batter for brains you need to redesign it.

Vegas, but you don't need to leave the house and the guys who snap those flyers at you on the street are push notifications now. Just what everyone wanted!

Dogs do not need substantially different things than humans, and if you are training your dog correctly you will probably look at our society and whisper “what the fuck!”

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.

have they tried putting the agents in a box made of something sturdier than sand

This is a question I'm interested in hearing more about. All the versions of LLMs we have seen so far have been made by the worst people and have so so many harms baked in. Is it possible for other folks to build something different (_Small_ Language Models, maybe) that addresses most of the harms?

Marco Rogers@polotek.bsky.social

Sure. All those things are true. It is not inherent to the tech. The same is true of social media. And the reason is the same. The people controlling it want it that way.

No one gets a PhD in "what if the people in charge of the Pentagon are chud idiots and they collapse the world economy because caring about strategy is Woke and Gay". But that is (self-evidently) a far more likely thing to happen, simply because it only requires stupidity to accomplish.

Consider this your assignment for National Voter Registration Day. Head to IWillVote.com and check your voter registration status. Then send this to the group chat and make sure they check theirs, too. We all need to turn out this November and be too big to rig.

I think the Atmosphere needs to start talking about renewables given all the AI-related emissions going into the... Atmosphere. I recently purchased the domain atproto.solar. And I'll offer that domain to anyone who's able to run a PDS that operates 100% on solar/renewable energy. Let's chat.

To be clear, "once all the immigrants are gone" these folks tacitly expected Black people to go back into the fields

Farmer complains he can’t get workers to pick peas after offering free housing & $1,400 a week. Where are the Americans who will do the work now that ICE has driven away undocumented immigrants? I guess elections have consequences. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Second grade teacher: This kid is awful. Whenever we have reading time, he sits under his desk to read. And I tell him no, you have to sit in your chair like everyone else. We get in an argument, "it's reading time, not sit-in-chairs time" and he distracts everyone. Why can't he follow rules?! 1/2

what experiences do you look back on and think "...wow, that was totally my ADHD"?

Third grade teacher: My favorite student. He comes, grabs a book and reads quietly under his desk. Sometimes I call on him to make sure he's keeping up, and he's already read what we're on. He's burned through all our planned work for the year. He's now sneaking books from my personal bookshelf.

Guys I hate to break it to you, but under capitalism, automation improves productivity but doesn't actually reduce the amount of time workers must work to survive. Instead, productivity gains are captured as profit. Only worker organizing will reduce our labor time. Yes, this applies to 'AI'
