If you thought the Conversion Practices Bill is already bad thanks to all the loopholes and allowances it provides, then don’t worry - it’s about to get worse. The Government are hearing “evidence” from anti-trans campaigners Helen Joyce, Dennis Kavanagh and the LGB Alliance this week.

If we’re doing this, I want to see a crackdown on people taking their whole set-up to cafes, pubs & coffee shops who then get annoyed at others who go to those places to socialise.

Yiannis@yiannisbab.bsky.social

I love the “not everyone can afford headphones” line. As if it’s obligatory to play shitty TikTok’s on public transport and you can’t possibly be expected to go 10 minutes without assaulting your eyeballs with mindless crap

“Not everyone can afford co-working spaces” You’re likely a student or someone who is able to work remotely/from home so either go to the library or work from home, and let me catch up with my friends over a coffee.

Had political journos done their jobs, this rampant racism from a conspiratorial transphobe wouldn’t be news to them and could’ve maybe prevented this washed up bigot from being part of the legislature.

Peter Walker@peterwalker99.bsky.social

Fairly open racism and far right talking points from someone who is, last time I checked, a Conservative peer.

I'm so sick of this “worthy of respect” legal fiction because on a literal level it just... isn’t. An all-consuming and cruel hobby that has you obsessing over the genitals of cartoon aliens and transvestigating complete strangers. It’s worthy of ridicule, shame, and total marginalisation.

We won’t take your claims of discrimination, harassment or assault seriously but we said the “thing” so really, I don’t know what you’re all complaining about.

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

Relatedly: in retrospect one of the dumber bits of political ZIRP that shows how unserious all the discourse was during Obama and Trump 1 was people sneering at the army, cops, CIA, etc making generic “love is love, diversity is good” type statements because they were ‘inauthentic’ or some shit.

Haven’t seen it, have no intention of seeing it but I find it weird that so many people seem to ignore the fact that Cruise’s entire career exists for the benefit of Scientology

7 days into this challenge. 35km of 115km done. Please share and/or donate to help bring a stop to prostate cancer destroying so many lives. Thank you 💙

Hello! I’m taking on the challenge of running 5k every day of October to raise funds and awareness for the vital work that @prostatecanceruk.bsky.social do. If you are able to donate or share, I shall be very grateful! Thank you 💙 prostateunited.prostatecanceruk.org/fundraising/...

Nah, BeeGees version is an odd tempo. And you know, half a century old.

Anon Opin@anonopin.bsky.social

When I mention that something is a 'Tragedy' or sing it and someone either puts their hands either side of their head or says 'Oh I LOVE Steps!', and don't mention the BeeGees? Those people should be pig fucked

This starts on Thursday. Any donations or shares will be very much appreciated! Thank you 💙

So we’re looking at mid 2030s at the earliest for something that has been promised to various degrees by different governments for the best part of a decade?

adult care reform was always going to have to be phased in, and after Labour wasted two years twiddling its thumbs it's not a huge surprise that major change won't come this side of an election. not really Burnham's fault - blame Starmer/Reeves/Streeting

Full explanation of "Tommo" slashing a boat

Emma Yeomans@yeomans.bsky.social

Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

Replying to @oxfordclarion.bsky.social

Piddington Parish Council chair Tim McNally previously thanked Elon Musk, a vocal backer of Tommy Robinson, for supporting his campaign against the asylum centre. McNally wrote on his PiddingtonRoars X account: “Elon Musk just gave a tiny Oxfordshire village a global megaphone. Thank you @elonmusk.”

Jamie reposted

‘Danny Tommo’, leader of the balaclava-clad blackshirt rallies, says he will travel to Piddington “in the coming days” following the Parish Council’s stunt referendum: “I want to hear about safety concerns for their women and children.” Tommo was jailed for two years in 2016 for a knifepoint kidnap.

The councillor who chairs Piddington Parish Council, near Bicester, says that yesterday’s stunt referendum – in which the village voted to leave the UK in protest against an asylum centre – was “an example of democracy in operation”. Tim McNally himself gained his role without a contested election.

I think the worst part of Labour's response to the fascist mobilisation is Andy Burnham's absence. He's the most popular politician in the country, with social media reach and actual powers of persuasion, and he's saying nothing in public. He can actually be of use here but he's choosing not to

There’s something so inhumanly cynical about piggybacking on the mourning of the death of a beloved advocate for children’s literacy by donating the first entry in your own series of books to drive up sales of the other books, market a tv show, and make people forget you sued Amnesty International

More than 200,000 print editions and audiobooks of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will be donated to schools, libraries and hospitals across the UK, US and other territories worldwide. Read more 👇

Here's the official announcement of Parton's passing from her reps, along with the request that in lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at www.imaginationlibrary.com

Alex Zalben@azalben.bsky.social

Dolly Parton, among a thousand other amazing things she did in her life, gifted over 330 million books to kids through her Imagination Library program. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the world, but you can support the program today to keep it going imaginationlibrary.com

My nieces and nephew are recipients of this. They love reading in large part because of her. If we could all be a little more Dolly, the world would be a far better place. We’ve lost a true great today.

If “academic freedom” existed in a vacuum, yeah, sure but history is replete with atrocities that have stemmed from awful people using awful people’s work as justification. So yeah, defend all academic freedom but don’t act upset when tyrants act on it.

Jason Lee Byas@jasonleebyas.bsky.social

If I'm in one of these two groups, it's the played-for-fools group. My opinion of Cofnas is very low, but "academic freedom for people of good character" is a principle that, once put into practice, collapses pretty quickly into no academic freedom.

“It’s impossible that Jason Arday could have got his post without DEI,” say people about an industry which can find 200 academics willing to sign a letter in support of David Miller and another 200 academics willing to support Nathan Cofnas.

EXC: Equalities minister warns racism and sexism have become normalised in Britain, and calls out opposition politicians for making openly racist statements. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

I get that the Guardian NUJ will rightly prioritise its members but this statement doesn’t really inspire hope of change. Calling “some” of the criticism “genuine” and just saying it is “right to seek to learn lessons”. No commitment to do so and gives sense of minimising the criticism.

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Guardian NUJ statement @gonuj.org

Like, we can’t continue to rely on a news organisation’s “decency” to stop and counter unethical and harmful practices. But any attempt at regulation will be opposed. As will ad boycotts. They’ve no incentive to change so likely won’t.

Periodic reminder that Kathleen Stock unapologetically crowdfunded for neo-Nazi bullies in their calamitous libel case against me.

Omar Khan@omaromalleykhan.bsky.social

Imagine crowd funding to support two people who lost a libel case when a judge concluded actually yes your friends are antisemities as a matter of fact (see below) and then still thinking you are entitled to speak about how racism is exaggerated I mean I guess you're at least consistently wrong

Generally agree but frankly, if you still “ascribe meaning to” HP related stuff without it being tarnished by Rowling’s radicalisation and bigotry, I will ridicule you.

My hot take is that retirees who decide to live abroad shouldn’t be eligible for state pension. Workplace pensions/retirement savings, sure but state pension? No, absolutely not.

Duncan Hothersall@dhothersall.bsky.social

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but it continues to amaze me that while people are happy to be wound up into blind rages about immigration and trans rights - things which won't harm them at all - they aren't even remotely angry about this, and this will actually make their lives much worse.

A cunt may be nice to you personally but is still a cunt, especially when said cunt had a national platform to spout stuff that would get the average person put on a register and/or a watchlist.

Ben Goldacre@bengoldacre.bsky.social

Sad to see people posting on social media negatively about Rod Liddle, who died yesterday. If I have disagreed with you very strongly in life - and you die - I hope I'll be either silent, or kind.

Film Storm is awful, and that’s no disrespect to Berry, she wasn’t given anything apart from in X2 where she summoned numerous tornadoes, which was pretty good. Now X-Men ‘97 Storm, she deservedly gets her flowers. Same goes for Rogue; bad film, great tv series.

I put on The Last Stand for some reason and all I can think of is the greatest tumblr post of all time

Now, I do like the X Men movies but bar a couple of them, they were basically the Wolverine universe and every other beloved character was basically nerfed and put on the sidelines. And finally, to get back to the point, movie Rogue in particular, should get the cure if she wants to.

This artery into Oxford has been closed since 2023, btw. Genuinely feel for the residents and businesses in the area that this has heavily impacted.

Botley Road rail bridge's reopening has been delayed by up to six weeks – pushing it back to mid-October. Three leaks were unexpectedly discovered in a gas pipe at the site, which now has to be replaced. Network Rail says "the pipe has not been damaged by our work".

Genuinely, why do we excuse football fans for supporting something (league or higher) that we all know is corrupt and ethically questionable but we call out others for doing the same when it comes to the sports and events they’re fans of?

I get this, and agree with the first two sentences. The third and final one, however, is just naive. In every international sporting event, there is at least a degree of political reasoning for which nation other countries support. You can want it to not be true, we should, but this isn’t new.

Adam Schwarz@adamjschwarz.bsky.social

Trump has done such a massive disservice to the US football team and American fans with his intervention. He's essentially politicised the team through tainting them with his corruption. The rest of the world is now rooting for Belgium tonight for political reasons. That's not how sport should be.

America tells itself it’s a nation of hard work. It isn’t. It’s just a nation of people whose singular purpose is to complain until they get what they want. “I want to speak to your manager” - the American Dream™️

When the father of a murdered son makes a public statement saying "we do not want his death to be used to create further division, hatred or tension", then I believe it's incumbent on any news outlet reporting on Farage's comments to ensure people know he has chosen to disregard the family's wishes.
