If you care about keeping the Academy of Natural Sciences open to the public in Philadelphia, I need you to read and share this thread.
Trish Wellenbach was sent from the mayor's office to oversee the Academy of Natural sciences situation. She needs to hear from us. Here comes the action item:
Good morning, team. We have 3.5 days until Drexel closes the Academy of Natural Sciences. It’s time for you- yeah YOU- to make some calls.
Step 1: Tell the following people we need help pressuring Drexel to keep the museum open:
Josh Shaprio 717-787-2500
Mayor Parker's 215-686-2181
🏆 AGU is excited to announce the recipients of the 2026 Union Medals, Awards and Prizes; Fellows; and Section Awards and Lectures. Please join us in congratulating these accomplished individuals.

Just finished a kickoff meeting w the “ActiveSOIL” team— and I can barely believe my good fortune - getting to work on soil health w this amazing group!
w/ @andreasrichter.bsky.social@cemess.bsky.social, Caitlin Singleton (Aalborg University), and Michael Obersteiner (University of Oxford)
Thanks to a generous award from Novo Nordisk Foundation, we will study how the *active* portion of the soil microbiome shapes biogeochemical processes in soils across Denmark, California, and warming/management studies. Our goal— establish a mechanistic and quantitative understanding of soil health
Soil health is a concept we often invoke, but struggle to measure. Our team will use some amazing tools -allowing us to measure and model this critical metric, and develop more rigorous strategies to encourage sustainable agriculture and food security.
I'll tell you why I don't fear the machines: it is because in this, the year of our lord twenty twenty six, despite us burning the planet for compute, it remains impossible to simply one-click share an event in a Google calendar so it becomes an event in an Outlook calendar and vice versa.
An energy story: 4 years ago, I got a call from former Sec of Energy Jennifer Granholm (actually a VM — I was on a flight when she rang). With the news that I would receive the DOE Office of Science Lawrence Award. It was utterly unexpected.
It cost far more than the DOE award… but I’m so proud we did it! It brings me great joy to open the app and see we’re living on free energy from the sun.
And even more exciting to think that we will someday be a tiny piece of the data that my colleagues put together in the LLNL energy flowcharts…

I listened again & again to make sure it was real. Among many wonderful things—it came with a $$ award. Enough to save for something special.
For years it sat in savings … but last fall, w/ the home solar tax credit ending, it was time.
We installed 7kW solar & 15kW battery, enough to run our household, partly charge the car, and someday run a heat pump & appliances.
It took many months. A huge amount of my husband’s time. In Berkeley there are countless hoops, and we’re not paid for what we send to the grid (good reasons).
1/17 Submissions are now open for the 2027 Microbial Population Biology GRC! We expect this meeting to be extraordinarily oversubscribed. If you want to come, time is of the essence--apply ASAP!

Attention Philadelphia!
We're hosting a rally to demand that Drexel University maintain The Academy of Natural Sciences Museum open to the public.
Join us on Tuesday morning at 10am in front of the academy. Please spread the word, we need all hands on deck!

The emissions scenarios underlying the next generation of climate model runs that will be featured in the upcoming IPCC 7th Assessment Report are officially out! I have a big new explainer over at Carbon Brief taking an in-depth look at what they mean and whats changed: www.carbonbrief.org/...
🚨WARNING🚨
Today is the LAST DAY to leave your public comment on the NSF Proposal.
The Proposal implements some of Vought's Science-Destroying OMB Proposal plans in advance: zurl.co/9nywR
Leave your public comment TODAY using our guide & tool: fight2win.standupforscience.net/campaign/Pro...
Three more days to comment on NSF's attempt to smuggle in OMB's already-rejected policies of terminating any grant without cause, gutting civil rights obligations and restricting international collaborations. Submit your comment today! Then call your representatives. 🧪
My comment on NSF-2026-OTR-0001, NSF's obsequious gutting of their own procedures, replacing them with OMB's proposed rules undermining federal grantmaking with their ideological agenda.
Need guidance on commenting? @standupforscience.net has you covered: fight2win.standupforscience.net#NSF
"I have to say I've never been more shocked by the so-called climate "movement." I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't the immediate cowering that so many organizations and politicians are doing" - @amywestervelt.bsky.socialdrilled.ghost.io/the-problem-...
Anyone else having trouble getting a NZ visa for #ISME20? Submitted mine days ago but it is still pending…now looks like I’ll miss Monday as well as the opening ceremony 😞
Huge faculty recruitment effort at the University of Chicago -- a division-wide, open-rank search looking to hire about 20 faculty across 5 research areas in biology. Come be our colleague!

We composited soil cores and lost 49 AM fungal taxa doing it.
Sequencing individual subsamples found them. The ones that vanish are rare, patchy, and phylogenetically clustered.
Also drying vs freezing made no difference really.
Sample at the scale your question lives at.

I just followed this advice to comment on the OMB rule changes.
There are about 3 hours left before the deadline (tonight at 11:59p EDT). If you benefit from US Government-funded research make sure to get your comments in.

California gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra just took half a million dollars from the fossil fuel industry. This on top of the max contribution from Chevron.
When someone shows you who they are, believe them.

Devastating loss of Dr. Adriana Romero-Olivares this week. She was an amazing mycologist, a leader in her field, & my friend & collaborator. This is a tremendous loss for mycology, science, & the world. There is a meal train for her husband & two small children

Prof. Adriana Romero-Olivares, UC Riverside, was doing incredible work on how fungi and ecosystems respond to global change. A rising voice, a dynamic scientist and educator, a young mother, wife and daughter gone far too soon. A huge loss. Her family, students and community are in my thoughts.
Such heartbreaking news….i have long enjoyed Adriana’s work on fungi and warming, Valley Fever and ways to better engage with the Global South. My heart goes out to her family and colleagues.

Today was a good day. Each year in mid-April, I give one of my favorite lectures...at Berkeley High School's 9th grade Climate Conference. We talk about Farming Carbon, how rocks (minerals) + roots + microbes + water = soil. We go over how the earth system is changing...
and how "later is too late" to get serious about renewables and valuing carbon. Last, we talk about all the ways we can approach #CO2removal (#CDR), watch the roads2removal.org video, and I do my best to get them excited about the big opportunities for agricultural soils!
You wanna know if deeply rooted grasses put more carbon in the ground? "Sometimes you've gotta rent a van and drive around the country..." So said @ericslessarev.bsky.social & team in this wonderful study. 12 sites in central/eastern USA...

all >10yr switchgrass fields, next to business-as-usual annual crops. All with #radiocarbon measurements down to 1 meter. Would you expect more SOC in the perennial grass soils? Or a correlation with pH, climate, mineralogy? Read it. You'll be glad you did.
(Hint: yes, it is all about the roots!)
