Mental health and addiction issues may make someone more vulnerable but homelessness is actually caused by a lack of housing that people can afford to live in. That is attributable, in very large measure to the extreme commodification of #housing provision.

Paul Calandra has put 8 Ontario school boards under supervision for financial mismanagement so having Stan Cho - who spent thousands of dollars on Toronto hotel rooms despite living in the city - as his parliamentary assistant makes perfect sense in Doug Ford’s Ontario. 🙃

"Cutting Red Tape" - is a Conservative phrase for removing environmental protections and letting big business do what it wants. It's truly pathetic that you are doing it and trumpeting it, as if it's something to be proud of. There is no Liberal party anymore. @markgerretsen.bsky.social

The construction vehicles may have left, but they'll be back (maybe even tonight). The bike lanes will be torn up. The only real power to stop this is at the ballot box. But this still feels like a victory, and I hope the mobilization can increase impactful political organizing for Torontonians.

I’m deeply saddened to learn of the incredible Irene Mathyssen’s passing. Irene was a force who fought relentlessly for our movement, and for a Canada that upholds the dignity of every person.

Canada has lost a great fighter for justice and democracy. Irene Mathyssen has gone to the angels. I had the honour to serve with her in parliament. She was a tireless advocate for people. I loved Irene and her beautiful family. She worked to make Canada a better place. She is with the angels.

Can we add up how much $$$ #Ford has cost this province? From the beer stores to Ontario Place to his stupid ads, to .... I can't even list it all. This is why we don't have $ for schools, health care, social services. He's too busy making sure his buddies are satisfied and taxpayers keep paying.

This is the exact same approach the Liberals fought under Stephen Harper. Now, they're bringing back that very same agenda and Harper is cheering from the sidelines.

Bank of Canada security officers have been on strike for 100+ days. The Bank has been caught twice violating federal anti-scab law and even hired Pinkertons, a contractor notorious for violent strikebreaking. PM Carney says he stands with workers. Why won't he condemn this corporate lawbreaking?

Once again, for the politicians, business leaders, and journalists still actively posting on X/Twitter: why? You're using a platform that's owned by someone who's trying to break up your country. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

There it is. Elon Musk now advocating for Alberta separation. That should perhaps be one of the biggest reasons to vote to stay. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli

We can rant about Doug Ford all we like, pointing out that he’s an incompetent buffoon, poor fiscal manager, and unscrupulous grifter, but apparently he’s just giving the people what they want. Too many of our neighbours look at the PCs and say “yes, that most closely aligns with my worldview”.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Dr Dean Burnett@drdeanburnett.bsky.social

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

I do think this should put some of the hand-wringing over the uniquely sinful American electorate, uniquely feckless institutions, etc in perspective. The truth is that there is a large trans-national constituency of people who actively want this. They aren’t deceived. They want this.

Mrs. Detective PikaBOO, Esq.@clapifyoulikeme.favrd.social

On the one hand, it’s comforting to know that Americans aren’t uniquely stupid, voters everywhere have skulls filled with mush and worms. On the other hand, global fascism is probably not an ideal state of affairs.

Throwing billions in public money behind a pipeline at a time of climate breakdown – while sweeping aside environmental protections, meaningful Indigenous consultation and workers’ right to strike – is absolutely not in the national interest.

John McCullagh reposted

Somehow this is only a crisis when building things like trains, not pipelines.

Toronto Star@thestar.com

Canada’s first high-speed rail line could cost as much as $113 billion to build, according to an analysis published by the Parliamentary Budget Officer on Thursday — significantly higher than the federal government’s previous $90-billion estimate.

Be serious. Bert and Ernie are not “in love.” Maybe they used to be, once

It was over 50 years ago that David Lewis called out “corporate welfare bums”. And here we are still doing the same stuff generations later. Maybe it’s time to try a different strategy.

Where’s that venn diagram? I hope the residents of #ldnont realize that voting for tax freezes also means voting for services freezes. We won’t get any resolution to homelessness, addiction, or even the additional police you think you need (you don’t) without additional funding.

Even locally during this municipal election campaign . There are openly active transphobic candidates running for #ldnont city council but no one is talking about it.

As we sit on the precipice of another election in BC—particularly considering the climate with the Democrats in the U.S. right now—it's worth pushing progressive politicians to vocally affirm their support of LGBTQ2S+ folks (and particularly trans people), rather than accepting silence as support.

Carn(ey)age. Rolling back a half century of progress in environmental and climate protection. For what? Oh right, profits for the already very fucking rich & some jobs in the extractive sector, while the rest of us are fucked by climate, ecological and democracy’s collapse. Danger: Banker At Work.

Toronto Star@thestar.com

The federal government tabled new legislation Monday to make sweeping changes to environmental and labour rules, in Mark Carney’s latest effort to remove what he sees as barriers to development in pursuit of his pro-growth agenda.
