My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Every country has Republicans

Flávio Bolsonaro refuses to concede after losing Brazil's presidential runoff to Lula. "It is impossible to acknowledge the election results. We will ask for the elections to be annulled."

Fun fact: he calls himself Mr. Beast because he doesn't want people to confuse him with the vice-president: Jimmy Donaldson Vance.

"He keeps it in the trunk of his car. Swears the guy was dead when he found him, but who can say?"

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "Did anybody ever see the build, the body, on Bobby? Did anybody ever see? He's got the body of a 30 year old."

Every time Vance speaks, I feel unclean. It feels wrong to watch someone do this to his own soul.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

WOW -- Vance *defends* Vivek's reprehensible ad 👇 Q: Ramaswamy's campaign put out a controversial ad featuring his opponent's mother. Some Republicans are backing away. Do you think it was appropriate? JD VANCE: Well, I'll be honest. Whether the ad was appropriate or not is not really my concern.

The same week that the date for scuttling the SS United States was announced. The metaphors are hitting thick and fast.

Tony Stark@tonystark.bsky.social

“Pete broke the world Eisenhower built.”

I hadn't actually read this before. The end is basically "weird, it's almost as though we're picking out stuff that has nothing to do with us just to get mad about'. One of those sentences that makes you think Republicans are like 🤏 this close to getting it (they are not).

Robert Komaniecki@komaniecki.bsky.social

From the conservative subreddit

Many people are asking why JD Vance, who has a history of renaming himself for the important men in his life, doesn't reclaim his former middle name "Donald." Is he ashamed of the president? Where's the gratitude?

[Malcolm Gladwell Voice] What if we don't have *enough* deputy gangs?

Joey Scott@joeyneverjoe.bsky.social

New from me: a deputy refused to show his tattoos and was fired. His wrongful termination suit revealed the scope of an internal investigation that identified 271 employees that either admitted or potentially have tattoos associated with two deputy gangs.

Re the last repost, one of the things that has stuck from my time in the behavioural science snake oil mines was an experiment where if people planned a week of movie viewing they would pick a mix of genres, some 'highbrow' etc but if they picked day to day it was all the same stuff

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the group Thomas was with had tipped CNN to it before he even asked the question. That said, there’s nothing El-Sayed could’ve said or done to avoid this headline

this is the reason these questions are asked. it doesn't matter how well el-sayed answers, the media get to write a headline with his name and the muslim brotherhood in it. heated, islamist, implications, criticize, disavow, dual loyalty, scary man bad

I'm slightly disappointed that Zacharia is leaving before we got a chance to move on from "can she call herself a lawyer if she's not a lawyer" to the much funnier question "can she call herself Dr. Zacharia because she has a juris doctor degree?"

This has always been a BS argument. Like "Oh I ~had~ to break into my neighbors' house tonight because I thought they might get a security system tomorrow." It wouldn't matter unless you were planning to rob them at some point.

Ron Johnson blames US for Putin invading Ukraine: "The way we treated Russia after we won the Cold War, how we pushed them. I'm not defending Putin, but we said we were not gonna move NATO one inch to the east. We brought it right to their doorstep basically. What did we think Putin was gonna do?"

4. Wimping out on expansion is just a way of propping up a thoroughly broken status quo. Moreover, the nation has expanded markedly since 9 justices became the norm, and yet our institutions remain stubbornly shrunken. SCOTUS should expand, but so should the House! We need a 21st century government!
