Beyond the horrifying reality that a hospital is trying to "clear the pentobarbital from [Christa Pike's] system" currently, the litigation over Tennessee's actions this week will shine a very clear light on the many, many reasons why governments should not be trusted with killing their citizens.

Steven Hale@iamstevenhale.bsky.social

Story here. Attorneys say Pike is unconscious, on a ventilator and that both of her arms were “swollen, burned, and blistered” upon her arrival at the hospital Wednesday night. nashvillebanner.com/2026/10/02/c...

Abolish this agency. Burn it to the ground. Scatter the ashes. Imprison those involved.

Video of an ICE agent pulling a gun on a wife and mother, who is a US citizen born and raised in the area, near Bailey's Crossroads in Northern Virginia yesterday. Chillingly, they claimed she “almost ran them over” until she told them she had video proving that was a lie.

Bolts staff writer Alex Burness explains how Southern states ignored a Reconstruction-era law and manipulated the criminal legal system to prevent Black people from voting. This year, that has finally caught up with one state: Virginia.

Platner did not magically appear. He was recruited as an avatar, someone to represent the aesthetic of white working class men. That bias is the root of why people believed he was the only populist who could win. And why they let him get much farther than he should have. My latest piece:

I thought I was doing a small story on confusion over the sudden disappearance of water fountains on a popular South Mississippi biking and running trail. What I found was a bigger story about homelessness, the meaning people find in the things they love, public infrastructure and civic engagement.

Mississippi Free Press@mississippifreepress.org

Water fountains disappeared from the Longleaf Trace in June as the board that governs it grew concerned about how homeless people were using its facilities. Runners and bikers who use the 44-mile trail fear the decision could have dire consequences in Mississippi's summer heat. buff.ly/pBXSvrI

The TL;DR, as always, is this: SCOTUS will allow Donald Trump to wreck separation of powers and the rule of law, but they draw the line at wrecking capitalism.

Mark Joseph Stern@mjsdc.bsky.social

Slaughter is an earthquake: SCOTUS has overturned a 90-year-old precedent that facilitated much of modern governance by granting many agencies meaningful independence from the president. Now SCOTUS crushes that independence ... for seemingly every agency except the Federal Reserve.

I've been adding to this Coretta Scott King thread for the past month. But for Memorial Day, I wanted to highlight Coretta Scott King's longstanding antiwar activism & the ways she led the way, influenced her husband & stood up against "constant denunciation to oppose the Vietnam War.Please share.

So Coretta Scott King is the "family leader" around global peace issues. When MLK gets the Nobel Prize in 1964, she sees as their responsibility to the world. She pushes him on Vietnam; in 1965, yrs before him, she starts publicly speaking & leading the antiwar effort, speaking at rallies & marches.

I’m a broken record, but it’s facially insane that the SCOTUS’s position is that the interest of a political party—an entity with no special constitutional protection—in gerrymandering is more important than black people’s right to vote, which we have several constitutional amendments addressing
