Great advice from @portermcconnell.bsky.social on how to rank in the #DC at-large race. Read her post and the link. And remember to rank Elissa Silverman first and Oye Owolewa secondf if you care about having a progressive DC Council!

Porter McConnell@portermcconnell.bsky.social

📣 DC ELECTION HEADS UP 📣 Because of a quirk of ranked choice voting, progressives should vote 1. Elissa Silverman 2. Oye Owolewa because it maximizes the chances for both candidates. More at the link. www.washingtonsun.com/metro/dc-ran...

Just eyeballing it, prison pops in 2023 had returned to about where they would have been had the pre-2020 declines kept pace. Which suggests that any Covid-specific reductions were mostly wiped out. Which means politicians chose not to capitalize on the reductions Covid foisted on them.

I’m seeing people reacting by pointing out that he’s obviously wrong. I appreciate that, but it’s also a pointless exercise. The problem isn’t that he’s wrong. The problem is that this is normal in American politics — and it’s been normal for a while.

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising
