New here. Used to be a climatologist. Became a priest. Left because they hate queers. Worked for the NHS a bit. Retired. Interests include alcohol and classical music. Swear a lot.
Hiya! 👋
One of the nice things about Celebrity Traitors is how easily and without fuss absolutely everyone uses Bella Ramsey’s they/them pronouns. See how easy it is not to be an asshole?
"A society in which every child shall grow up in pleasant homes and attractive surroundings and with good educational opportunities; in which every adult shall be provided for in sickness and adversity; and in which the pensioner can take untroubled ease."
Development economist Arthur Lewis.
Never been to the opera before?
Now’s your chance. We’re giving away 70,000 free tickets to the @metopera at the iconic Lincoln Center. Go to on.nyc.gov/opera to enter the lottery. There’s not a bad seat in the house.
There were many ways in which the US and its allies could have responded to the horror of 9/11. But by building extreme security states, launching pointless forever wars and restricting domestic dissent, successive governments inflicted more harm on their nations than the terrorists could have done.
JK Rowling uses her Harry Potter money to fund lawsuits against companies that support trans rights so no, I do not care what Hogwarts house you are in.
One of the absolute bloody worst things about not being well and stuck in my flat is that right when I could be reading and listening to music, my attention span has been buggered by pain and fatigue. Pain is, above all, boring.
I was searching on Plex for the film "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage". Nothing came up. I was perplexed. Surely such a classic film can't just vanish?
It turns out autocorrect had changed the title to "The Bird with the Crystal Plunger" – an altogether lesser-known title.
You should hang your heads in shame for producing guidance which is practically unworkable, intrusive and discriminatory, which does nothing to improve the safety of cis women, while making the lives of trans and gender non-conforming people considerably less comfortable and potentially dangerous.
Good things when you're immobilised, uncomfortable or in pain, and your attention span is (temporarily, I hope) broken:
• Sonnets
• Single movements of symphonies*
• Webern
* Yes, you can listen to one movement of a symphony and the Music Police don't come for you in the night
While I'm laid-up for the summer with a broken knee, my attention span is completely buggered. Can't settle to anything. I can, however, confirm that it's rather fun listening to Der Ring Des Nibelungen scene by scene – it really does leave you wanting more.
Just had meeting with kiddo's school.
She has been fully supported, treated with full equality & dignity for years.
All of that changes from September. Full segregation & humiliation across the board.
The school staff cried in the meeting. This will absolutely lead to children's deaths 1/2
🚨The UK-US pharma deal with Trump will cost 229,000 lives in England.
The deal is so bad that the editor of the British Medical Journal says it suggests "We’ll kill our poor people to make your rich companies richer”.
Dear Andy Burnham, tear up this deal as Prime Minister. Thank you.
*Farage removes all his clothes in public and takes a dump on the floor*
Chris Mason: "some might say this is not the act of a PM in waiting but others note in today's politics the public appreciate authenticity."
After I wrote last week's column, I learnt that a neighbour with severe disabilities, an extremely tough & resourceful woman who lived to the full, died in the heatwave. Everyone here is devastated. I can scarcely express my anger towards a mindset that treats people like her as collateral damage. 🧵
This is exactly why we have Pride.
Because a few years ago this would have just been a hateful fringe figure - but this is where our politics is heading with a Government that kertows.
We will resist. And bring hope (*and* electing progressive politicians.) We will win.

Ten years ago today the whole country and its future were sacrificed on the altar of Boris Johnson’s ego, David Cameron’s stupidity and Nigel Farage’s prejudice.
A decade thrown away and a nation left angrier and poorer.
Thanks, you absoute pricks.
Look after yourselves this week, in our record-breaking heat. And don't let this or any government backtrack on its climate commitments: both to prevent the worst and to help us adapt to the escalating impacts to which - unfortunately and infuriatingly - we are now committed. #35YearsOfFailure
Both the government and the Court of Appeal now treat protesters as terrorists and terrorists as protesters. It's hard to accept that a "Labour" government is imposing rightwing authoritarianism on the UK, but please read this column to see what's happening.+🧵

This is Sam Fahd Abu Haikal.
A 7-month-old Palestinian baby killed by Israel.
If this were an Israeli baby or a Western baby, his face would be splashed across front pages.
Western leaders would condemn the perpetrator's evil.
Here? Silence.
