The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

This episode has exposed the principal weakness of Chartism, which is its inability to deal with shades of grey. If I say you owe me $80k, but if you complete a survey I’ll lower it to $10k, nobody would consider that $80k of debt. But what if I tell you to complete surveys until I say stop?

Nathan Goldwag@goldwagnathan.bsky.social

In the Great Chart War I am unequivocally on the side of the Bloodless Quants, who are usually correct on the specifics, and totally correct in general on the need for quantifiable data analysis. But today they seem to be reacting *extremely* uncharitably to a Tweet that is, at worst, poorly worded.

It can sound wishy-washy to say ‘feelings matter in public policy,’ but they do! What is the point of abundant resources if you live in a world that drives you to madness? Even if emotional concerns are sublimated by material ones, that doesn’t make them *totally* beneath our notice.

I should add that data analysis is a powerful tool, and an excessively feelings-based world order is genuinely a back door definition of fascism. We just need to understand the limitations of data in order to use it properly.

Those two situations show up on a ‘chart’ in an identical way, because they are technically the same in principle. With a certain amount of paper shuffling you can significantly reduce the debt you owe to the ‘proper’ figure.

You can’t graph bureaucratic friction, because it is a function of effort that is both difficult to measure and varies wildly between individual transactions. These are exactly the kinds of institutional failures one would expect from decisions made based on numbers.

Octopus is the easiest thing to cut out of your diet on moral grounds because it’s basically never around, probably has dreams and emotions and tastes like a tire.

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

These people are basically vibe coding politics. They just say whatever feels right.

Later, he claimed Mamdani never commented about the recent stabbing of an NYPD detective. Mamdani talked about the stabbing several times, including the below statement where the mayor notes he visited the injured officer:

But we know more than enough to say this: We, the people of NYC refuse to accept authoritarianism at our doorsteps. We will always defend the humanity of our immigrant neighbors. ICE's operations in New York City — and everywhere else — must come to a permanent end. #AbolishICE #ICEOutNow

I wish more people did condemn the Iraq invasion on 9/11. "Your pain does not justify inflicting pain on other innocent people" is a lesson that apparently more people need hammered into their heads repeatedly.

anyway in a just world a giant cartoon piano would fall on hanania and tracey in the middle of their pro rape podcast

This has to be the end stage of the current corporate internet. There are genuine functional elements of Facebook that are just not available to the public right now, and I refuse to believe that a competitor won’t arise in response eventually.

Schools have been trying to make the Automated Self-Esteem Industrial Complex work since DARE. But it can't! You can't en masse automatically convince kids that they are special! The very act of trying to do so communicates that they are, in fact, interchangeable cogs!

I don't think people really understand the psychic impact of knowing that multiple times a day every day your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and everyone who could ever have any power over you is being flooded with agitprop designed to make them hate you

Anyway! Applying for a couple of jobs I’ve seen this week but if you would like me to write for you/your project, please get in touch. I’m a versatile writer but I’m particularly great at dialogue and marketing copy. Plus I’m funny. But you know that. DMs are open or hit me up on LinkedIn

Some people think we need to triangulate and moderate ideologically to appeal to the maximum number of voters. Others think we need dynamic, exciting candidates who can galvanize new support outside of traditional demographics. Personally, I think we're all sinners in the hands of an angry God.

What this really shows is the difference between countries that were first introduced to the Smurfs via overland caravan routes from the Mongol Empire and the Ilkhanate in the 1300s and those that gained access through the 'Manila Galleons' and the 16th century Spanish silver trade with China.

Wow. The ICE shooter in Maine asked his ex-wife to "to lie for him and to cover for his character." She said he was abusive and had previously reported concerns about him to his military superiors. He was also a volunteer firefighter, but was removed after several spats with department leadership.

Yeah, people (not you!) have been eager to blame him on their intra-coalition rivals, but there really hasn't been any strong correlation between Platner boosting and positioning on what one might call the DSA-to-DNC spectrum. This really isn't the time for more infighting. He has to go.

seeing more of a particular brand of aggro post lately ("if you weren't a coward you'd be doing xyz thing that would have you dead or in jail" from posters who appear to themselves neither be dead or in jail). could just be feds/bots/trolls trying to entrap people on here but a PSA just in case

I said this back in January and I’ll say it now: the relative openness of Minnesota’s resistance has been a strength. It allowed huge numbers of people to take part while allowing virtually anyone to confirm that the purpose of the anti-ICE networks was nothing illegal, just legal observation.
