reminder that this is a totally made-up, invented story. obama's joke was not remotely interesting or controversial — they saw an opportunity to lie about what he said in a way they think advantages them and ran with it.

NEW: DSA's National Political Committee passed two resolutions today aimed at Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, beginning processes that could result in DSA-LA being forced to rescind its endorsement of her this weekend and/or Raman herself being expelled from DSA by January.

Size matters & Massachusetts large, nearly Nation leading, minimum lot size requirements are driving up home prices & restricting supply. I plotted 5 years of single-family home sales in Wellesley, Newton & Swampscott by lot size, with the same pattern playing out in each.

OK so I read the Lindsay Graham allegations and my first question is WHY did John McCain have what sounds like a sex dungeon in his Sedona home and do we really believe that

Nearly a decade ago, in a moment of almost cinematic ominous foreshadowing, I was visiting my dad while my stepmother was in the next room watching Ben Shapiro videos on full blast. You can guess what came next.

The social harms of sports betting vastly outweigh its benefits. It should be much harder to access and we should have strict limits on how much sportsbooks can take from any one bettor each year.

remember when people had cubicles (luxury) as opposed to this?

I consider myself a fairly compassionate & empathetic person, but the more I read about people in this particular demographic -- wealthy Gen X white men radicalized by social media & group chats -- the more I loathe them. I understand them *too well* to sympathize. They are contemptible & weak.

I used to run a silly little blog about dead malls with my friend and some of the commenters would accuse us of being corporate fat cats because we had our own web domain. we still joke about this corporate office tower we supposedly had so we could post low res pics of jcpenney locations

Hard not to notice that Democrats who are doing the best are the ones who are leaving this whole civility-and-norms, we-go-high, we-need-a-strong-Republican-Party bullshit behind and are simply giving Republicans exactly what they all ought to get at all times, which is undisguised contempt.

I don’t think Karen Bass was ever very interested in being mayor of Los Angeles or had any intellectual curiosity about the problems the city is facing.

Going on record to say that for any company in America given the choice between 1. AI productivity gains mean our 10,000 employees can work 4 days a week. 2. AI productivity gains mean we can layoff 2,000 employees and have 8,000 people work 5 days a week. None will choose option (1).

This is a wildly under appreciated point: social security taxes cap out at a very low rate, meaning low and middle income earners pay much more into the system than the highest earners. If SS taxed all income, most of its problems would go away

Again, you can always detect some faint embarrassment from Democrats when they talk about the ballroom, but “the president demolished a big part of the White House to build himself a palace with bribes from enemy powers” is, by an order of magnitude, the worst corruption scandal in US history

That's the kind of special interest rabbit hole I really love. Something more obvious catches your interest (the strip) and somehow your love for it takes you on increasingly niche adventures (historical societies, local arts) until you find yourself at a Mexican rockabilly party in parking lot.

Astounding to me any rock critic ever thought this album was bad. We could've had at least another decade of stuff like this if they didn't fuck with Rivers' head by hunting around for a single. Anyways it's not possible to find a riskier guitar solo on a pop record than the one in The Good Life.

yeah the 'main' antagonist (Sean Penn/Christmas adventurers) are kinda a bizarre cartoon characters but all the secondary ones (all the paramilitary agents) that he leads are played straight and serious as a heart attack and it really balances out very well.

A thing I really admired about that film is how it's sort of two wrapped in one. You have a mostly very funny, slapstick stoner comedy alla The Big Lebowski whenever DiCaprio is on screen and then a hard eyed thriller when Infiniti is on. It allows what is ultimately a very serious film to breathe

"Weird" was OK, but I really wish someone would call Republican voters what they are: Suckers. These are dumb rubes who fall for the wallet inspector routine over and over again. They spend their last pennies on magic beans because are in the constant thrall of some grifter. Be meaner to them.
