Tweed is such a beautiful fabric to wear this time of year because it produces, in Dolly Parton's phrasing, a coat of many colors. Even a solid-colored brown is not just brown, but bits of red, blue, and yellow to produce something that looks lifted off the Scottish landscape.

The other day this political commentator said on a podcast that he visited San Francisco and it was awful. He stayed in a hotel in Mid-Market and recounted how he then decided to walk with a friend of his from there to Zuni, which is the other side of mid-market. That's roughly a twenty minute walk.

If Dolly was our constant reminder that it was Good to be Good, Tim Curry was our reminder that it was Good to be Weird. Embrace your strangeness, sing with Muppets, wear your lingerie with a leather jacket, and fuck with uptight people who hate anything that makes them remotely uncomfortable.

The Library is devastated to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, a music legend and titan of children's literacy. Her Imagination Library program has earned multiple Library Literacy Awards and, in 2018, she visited us to donate its 100 millionth book to our collection and host a story time. 🦋❤️

Admittedly a US thing, but I think folks should reflect that Kimi, the open-weight AI model by $20b-valued Moonshot AI everyone is freaking out about, was developed by someone who went to CMU and then didn't stay in the US mostly because visas would prevent him setting up a US business

Stipulating that I can’t definitively verify that Buttons has the expertise he says, I learned a lot from this! Also this is the first time I’ve had that peak twitter experience of “I’ve actually spent my life studying this obscure topic in the news, here’s my take” on BlueSky

Since I did do my PhD in cyanobacteria growth and treatment optimization modeling AND work in the water treatment industry, I’m gonna share my theory as to what’s happening here and how to fix it. People are focusing on the painted bottom of the pool increasing residual heat, and while that 1/19

Hello! 👋 I'm hoping to raise money for two Bay Area cat rescues. If you post a screenshot of you donating at least $20, I will answer a style-related question for you. But first, let me tell you about the rescues, why they're worthy of your support, and hopefully get you to adopt a cat. 🧵

Gonna be a generational burden to recreate the norm that scamming other people is bad when our positions of leadership are being filled by proud scammers and people who previously only succeeded in the field of social media engagement bait

You know what we don't talk enough about? Queen & Annie Lennox/David Bowie rehearsing 'Under Pressure' in 1992. So much going on! Everyone's clothes, Bowie with a lit cig throughout, where Annie PROPER GOES FOR IT, George Michael singing along in the background. The amazing vocals. Yes, please!

It cost me $177 to renew my driver license today. Requiring certain ID to vote without making that ID easy, accessible, and free is 100% a poll tax.

Government issued ID should be 100% free. Getting a various stamps on it (operate a car, motorcycle, etc) can be an additional charge. But the basic ID must be freely accessible to everyone. And also work for checking out media in the library. Free.

The thing about AI replacing analysts that I think is implicit to a lot of people who understand AI, but not at all clear to the people doing layoffs is this: adversaries use AI for automation and as a force multiplier too. Humans are the deciding difference in who wins, beyond equal automation.

Met Brian when we were in student government together in 6th grade. He was already a smart and witty guy and incredibly creative. We hung out in the same circles through college and crossed paths a few more times in life through mutual friends. He will be missed.
