As ever, three quarters of "look at this asshole" is always "look at this". Don't do PR for the fash. Don't give free advertising to the worst bastards. There is no dunk witty enough to warrant amplifying their hate.

Brazilians recommending not to amplify right-wing talking points by dunking and quoting, as a winning strategy Next day, my tl is full of people dunking on rfk jr I literally would not have seen the bigotry if it wasn't for y'all repeating it. That's exactly what the Brazilians were on about!

I was astounded when, for the first time, I saw a speaker do this — use math to communicate, not just to signal. Flasbulb moment: 8th floor playroom, tech square. Vast minority of speakers really do this. Never seen it in a paper!

Interesting looking paper on what you can and can't identify from staggered adoption panel data. Also, I move that all important equations get subtitles:

This is a fucking banger 😍

When I pitched a review of Anton Jäger's Hyperpolitics, I wanted to read it against Fukuyama's End of History and the Last Man because both books tackle similar themes in radically different ways. The result is a double-helix of an essay that is one of the best things I've ever written for LC.

I often start with @brennanleemulligan.bsky.social “why do we tell stories” as the epigraph/opening for my talks on AP. But today’s version is bookended by my Mizzou classmate Bill Bradley (1976-2017) It’s a good day to read his work — on comics, on pop culture, on marriage, academia, and more.

Dr. Emily Friedman@ecfriedman.com

“To write, and to write about stuff that mattered to me, even if it strikes some as silly or lowbrow. The world changes fast, and life as we know it changes before we have time to register.” — William Bradley, “On Soap Operas, or, We Read and Watch Our Stories in Order to Live”

when this happens: 1. A founds band B w/ singer C. good music, improves w/ time. 2. C leaves B (b/c her creativity is stifled?). Solo music is better than w/B. 3. B hires singer D. B+D music is ok, not as good as B+C. 4. D leaves B, makes solo stuff better than her work w/B. maybe the problem is A?

The legal argument is an effort to define gender dysphoria as disqualifying for any position of power, authority, or public trust. Nancy Mace has a bill right now to expand the military ban to thousands more federal positions as mundane as air traffic control.

Two of the Linux vulns are in ksmb. Maybe having a Windows file server in the kernel is… unnecessary. (Seriously, the rate of vuln-finding has me thinking that we really need more thin kernels and microkernel designs. Contain the blast radius of future vulnerabilities.)

For a side project I've been exploring pushing code to handle untrusted inputs into WASM. It'll be a little slower, but I can sandbox the WASM runtime's resource access, so data exploiting vulnerabilities in the data processing also has to break out of WASM to do anything interesting.

We come back to the idea of Execs who really don't understand art or why people make art, in any way, finding ways to absolutely annihilate those that do, in a death of a thousand cuts and then one big 400-person cut. It's heartbreaking. The western games industry kills a NIntendo every year.

The second Knives Out movie, whose conclusion (apologies for spoilers) is that its villain is not some dastardly schemer but just an outright idiot, struck me as a taking a bit of a cop out at the time, but the more it's sat with me, the more I think Rian Johnson was right to make THAT the reveal.

Just been such a revolution in my worldview to realise that people like Musk actually believe this, this isn't just the nonsense they feed the rubes so they can do coldly rational mercantile calculations in smokey rooms among themselves. No. It's rubes all the way down, they're that stupid.

After the firefighting is done (and a nap) we'll need to have a long, serious conversation about the state of non-browser non-platform X.509 verifiers. The Linux status quo is "a pile of PEM files behind a dumpster" and that's not an acceptable excuse for a root store in 2026.

“Largest dataset of academic writing” — this gets to the heart of my main objection to TurnItIn, even pre-genAI. Why is it OK to require students to contribute their work to a for-profit company’s value proposition as a precondition of their education?

Ian Linkletter@linkletter.org

From 2023 "We are being very deliberate in releasing a detector that is highly accurate and trained on the largest dataset of academic writing. It is essential that our detector and any others limit false positives that may impact student engagement or motivation.” www.turnitin.com/press/turnit...

I do see TurnItIn as meaningfully different in this way from their scholarly publication product iThenticate — the latter, AFAIK, is just automating searches against the published body of scholarly literature. Useful capability (and it’s helped me catch stuff as an editor).
