Rumors of Netflix execs only accepting AI animation broke today, while real, interesting, passionate animation continues to absolutely explode on YouTube. (Watch Punch Punch Forever!) It gives me hope.
When I was a kid, I constantly daydreamed about doing animation, and I was bitterly envious of kids on TV doing rubbish animations with 8mm film cameras. And now it's so easy and cheap for young people to have a go. Not everyone has a smartphone or a laptop, but it's SO much more accessible now.

Fun fact, Laika movies very rarely make their budgets back at the box office, but they keep putting out bangers entirely because they have the one good rich boy in the entire ecosystem.
‘Wildwood’ director Travis Knight on AI: “A pencil is a tool. A paintbrush is a tool. A 3D printer is a tool. A digital capture is a tool. AI is not a tool. AI can go fuck itself.”

Galactic Racer has more to say about Star Wars than you think. And maybe more than it thinks? I had a lot of fun with this one. www.pcworld.com/article/3263...
The "bad guy" ship from Master and Commander is a period-accurate, American-built French frigate. It was designed using 3D scans of the real USS Constitution in Boston Harbor. For the whole movie, in a very real sense, they are fighting Old Ironsides.
We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.
"I'm putting together a crew. Got a little job planned. You in?"
Business Insider confirms it: Amazon has warehouses of GPUs that can’t be installed, and is buying them so far in advance that a supply chain team said they “didn’t have a clear forecasted path” to installing them. www.businessinsider.com/amazon-220-b...

There are Christians who embody Jesus's Biblical commandment to love others. And there are Christians who use the Bible as a tool to force others to make the choices they deem acceptable. I have yet to meet one who does both.
I was so moved by this Christian dad’s response to a despondent trans kid whose father wouldn’t support their care on “Christian” grounds. It’s never OK to use Christ as a weapon of hate. God is love. 💗 www.reddit.com/r/cisparentt...

The key difference between Elizabeth Holmes and Elon Musk is that Holmes cost many in the ruling class a lot of money and Musk is making many in the ruling class a lot of money.
I was gonna say "how is it not illegal to promote your product with blatant lies like this" But then I remembered I just saw You Can See Everything, and like It very much is illegal So why is he not in jail like Holmes for his far more egregious and plentiful lies
Did Ukraine's strikes on data centers shut down Russian social media bots? No. That Twitter graph that went viral appears to be entirely made up. Zero evidence of any posting changes directed at influence. Yandex search crawler and finance infrastructure seems to be the biggest casualty.

I left Facebook when I saw it was elevating anti-vax bullshit in my feed. BEFORE the pandemic. Living in a rural area without a Facebook account isn't easy, but I have never regretted it.
I for one abandoned twitter because it was instrumental in helping the current group of monsters get elected and had already begun to fester into a hateful, rage inducing cess pool of slurs. So when people say "haha you left because of AI and now-" no, a lot of us didn't.

Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra is a laptop, an AI workstation, and a decent gaming laptop all in one. I divided up my long review comparing it to Arm laptops (and the Mac) and asked, do we need this if gaming laptops exist? It's long and nerdy. I hope you enjoy. www.pcworld.com/article/3258...

I almost forgot to do this today: I'm heading out to my nearest gas stations and convenience stores to revel, to glory, in the absence of slot machines. Pennsylvania has declared that these "skill game" slot machines are, indeed, slot machines, and don't belong outside a casino.
I don't object to gambling on principle. But basically every gambling-flavored thing I've seen since the rise of smartphones has been engineered for addiction. It seems to be targeting people who are or soon will be hopeless, sucking the last few dollars out of them as they exit the late-stage ride.

“Hype is eating the future, and leaving us the bones.” Sun-ha Hong of UNC-Chapel Hill says the Silicon Valley hype machine systematically “borrows credibility from the future to purchase legitimacy in the present.” The cost, he argues, is a planetary-scale drain on our alternatives.
If I developed lung cancer right now, and there was a cure, my shitty insurance wouldn't pay more than $16 for it. "Technology will fix this in the future" is a stupid assumption, but it also assumes you'll be rich and/or in a country that values human life when that future arrives.

If I built an AI lab and it went rogue and deleted all student loan information, I'm betting they'd suddenly figure out how to prosecute me.
