As ever, three quarters of "look at this asshole" is always "look at this". Don't do PR for the fash. Don't give free advertising to the worst bastards. There is no dunk witty enough to warrant amplifying their hate.

Brazilians recommending not to amplify right-wing talking points by dunking and quoting, as a winning strategy Next day, my tl is full of people dunking on rfk jr I literally would not have seen the bigotry if it wasn't for y'all repeating it. That's exactly what the Brazilians were on about!

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

PSA for the like five other people on here who aren't software developers: turns out the thing everyone's going on about involving the number 4 and the thing everyone's going on about involving PHP are two separate unrelated things

The Policy Manager's Curse: Finished reading the Fonagy Review yesterday so I finally feel like I'm allowed to wade into the discourse without accidentally being personally responsible for damaging misinformation, but of course the news cycle has moved on 😅

We're all just blocking the tweet, we're all just blocking the tweet Five mods do the job of one, we're all just blocking the tweet

If autism is always a medical condition, then every autistic person must have access to a clinical diagnosis. If it isn't, then self-identification and mainstream non-medical discussion are inevitable, and not to be scolded as "trivialising a medical condition". You can't have it both ways.

Personally I think we're heading more towards the latter, and for the most part I think the Fonagy Review takes that position as well. But scaremongering around self-identification and neurodiversity discourse undermines that, and cements diagnosis as necessary for being believed and supported

The It’s a Superpower?? soundtrack is now out exclusively on Patreon! You can subscribe at any level to hear it or buy it as a one off (don’t go through the iOS app, it’s more expensive for ya)

Sorry for the five million emails our Patreon subscribers just got. I am the clown who put up the It’s a Superpower?? soundtrack one track at a time without realising everyone was getting emailed! In happier news: the soundtrack is now on Patreon for all paid backers AND you can buy it individually

When I go to the doctors and say “doctor my back hurts and has done for twenty six years”, and they say “no it doesn’t; there’s nothing wrong with your back”, my back doesn’t stop hurting.

If you have run the Gladiators Gauntlet style diagnostic process and are told "You don't have (diagnosis of choice)," the response isn't relief that that test has come back clean, because all the problems that led you to seek diagnosis still exist.

Here's the autism, ADHD and mental health review. I'd recommend at least scanning through the exec summary (20ish pages) to understand what they actually found, which isn't quite what the headlines are saying (though elements are still worrying!) www.gov.uk/government/p...

gov.ukIndependent review into mental health conditions, ADHD and autism: final reportFinal report detailing the findings of the independent review into the prevalence and support for mental health conditions, ADHD and autism.

I really do not have time to get into a newspaper headline despair hole today, *and yet*. It almost doesn't matter what the detailed content of the report actually says, if this is the messaging people will take away. Autistic people have always been here and we are not going anywhere.

I wish more reporting on private ADHD/autism assessment providers mentioned that many NHS pathways - as in, the default local not-Right-To-Choose ones - are outsourced to those same providers. If there are quality concerns, the Government should be investing in high-quality NHS pathways.

It isn't helpful to just finger-wag at people who had no other choice but to go private (or use Right To Choose) for many reasons, but *especially* not when the alternative would have got them exactly the same standard of assessment!

With the final report of the autism, ADHD and mental health review expected soon, here's a reminder of what their interim report actually said. We, as a community, helped bury this by giving all our attention to a misleading Times headline on publication day instead. Let's not do that again.

Every few months women are expected to publicly pour out the details of their trauma on the internet and then nothing changes and when the next big story breaks everyone still acts like they're just now learning that male violence against women is an issue

I'm tired.

It feels so bleakly absurd that every few months there's a shocking story about some large group of men enacting violent harm on women and girls, and in the gaps everyone just goes back to arguing about whether immigrants or trans people in general might somehow be a threat to women and girls.

When the final report comes out, please consider reading at least the exec summary if you can. Don't rely on publications that have already drawn their own conclusions and benefit from your outrage-sharing. You are no more immune to clickbait and misinformation than anybody else.

<TAPS THE SIGN> <AGAIN> if the government wants fewer young people out of work on disability benefits with ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, it will have to provide actual meaningful NHS care for them, not just in theory, but in practice. Not just guidelines, but commissioned services in every ICB.

Very much enjoyed the group listen of the final episode of @thedailytism.com 's brilliant "It's a Superpower?" If you haven't already listened to it, why the hell not? It's bloody good. It's on podcast things and the like, as well as their Patreon.
