My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

ITV’s back on the telly Everybody’s awfy happy Because they’ve got fuck all better to do with their time Than watch a stupid fucking programme! (Stuart Adamson improvising a verse of “TV Stars” when the Skids played Northampton a few days after ITV came back on the air)

#OnThisDay in 1986. Heartbreak for Nigel Mansell. Mansell (Williams-Honda) was running 3rd at the Australian Grand Prix and looking set to become the first British World Champion since 1976. But disaster struck on lap 64 of 80, a burst left rear tyre ending his title challenge. 1/3 © FOM #F1

Am loving the "No, everything is still awful or soon will be" replies here, the day after two right wing authoritarians lose decisively...take the win guys. Feel happy and optimistic for one day at least. Plenty of opportunities to be miserable!

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

What a great cover! The cast of 1977’s Live Stiffs Tour: Wreckless Eric, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Larry Wallis & Ian Dury. Some sat in on each other’s sets, with Dury, say, drumming for WE. For some, it was a very competitive business, with most accounts giving the crown to Dury & his Blockheads.

Liz Truss was always crackers (I worked with her for six months in 2012). But she wasn't completely delusional. It's quite sad really. A lot of Tory MPs who backed her knowing she wasn't remotely equipped should be deeply ashamed.

No, I'd have been stumped too.....the moustaches confused me. It's Blue Oyster Cult. Minus the umlaut. Stars of the new Jon Savage curation, "1976 : Something Was Going To Happen" Don't Fear The Reaper still works for me. And Christopher Walken. Now on the MB Record Show. buff.ly/E5ZUNTR

As today is the anniversary of the day the world was created (in 4004 BC) I thought it was only fitting that The Creation make an appearance on the MBRS. Well, one of their records, anyway. For All That I Am ? Brilliant. Although I couldn't get a photo with purple flashes. buff.ly/E5ZUNTR

Manfred Mann's use of the Mellotron was groundbreaking on this record, one of the earliest big pop hits that used it. Like another famous Tron Flute led track, it got to number two. Unlike the Beatles, stymied by Humperdinck, it lost out on the top spot place to Good Vibrations, which is fair enough

Was reminiscing via DM about an old BBC mate and I suddenly grew fond for the days when the BBC would fly me to Paris just to interview Nick Kent for a doc. Sorry to be 'we had the best of it' guy but it becomes more and more apparent every day that we bloody did. Education, freelancing, the lot.
