Methane pollution from US natural gas distribution and use is most thoroughly studied in Boston, an old city with a lot of old iron pipes. A new 10-year study in Indy, a newer city with mostly newer plastic pipes, estimates a methane pollution rate equal to 1.6% to 2.4% of natural gas consumption.

Justin Mikulka@justinmikulka.bsky.social

Every time we get new science on methane emissions from oil and gas the numbers are far worse than what we were told. Every time. "They estimated about 2% of all natural gas piped into Indianapolis is eventually leaked."

Ludicrous framing here from @nytimes.com. No serious Dems ever thought these would be slam dunks. And it's premature to let a centrist group get in a self-interested shot like this before we even know if these candidates will actually fare worse in the elections than other ones. Indefensible.

I don’t think a 21X increase in the cost to get a tanker out of the Persian Gulf with lower total exports than before the war is an achievement. Think tanks will soon start releasing non-peer-reviewed modeling of how the permitting bill might affect pollution, if they haven't already. Most will secretly have lots of ideology-driven thumbs on scales. One big way to tip the scales is by ignoring pollution associated with oil and gas exports.

Dr. Genevieve Guenther (she/they)@doctorvive.bsky.social

The real question is how this Permitting Reform bill expands global emissions. Most of the fossil infrastructure that will get built without review will be used for methane-gas exports. Advocates’ claim that US emissions will go down is like the three card monte of the campaign for this bill.
