On 9/11, I was still in bed when a housemate knocked on my door and alerted me to the attacks. Xavier U was inaugurating a new president, which meant no classes and an all-day forum. One was on Jihad vs. McWorld, the book by Benjamin Barber. I made it to campus and learned the event was canceled.

There was silence on campus that day. Classrooms discussions were intense. X is Jesuit Catholic, so students gathered at the campus chapel for an interfaith vigil. There were many int’l students present, included some Muslims. I remember offering a prayer for understanding among nations & religions.

The rest of the day my housemates and I watched TV and processed what was happening. I was a junior in college. The previous semester I’d lived in Nicaragua as part of an academic service learning program, learning about the impacts of US foreign policy. My world view was still forming.

Trump’s speech was a waste of a primetime address. Weak, whiny, incoherent, lied about so many things Americans know to be false, exposed his war strategy as dumb. Only rationale is he’s taking off to play golf tomorrow.
