I started thinking tonight about all the reasons I left Google and woof, that was a mistake. What a depressing train of thought that was. Now I hear they're illegally clearing forests in Finland for data centres? Like "whoopsy doodles we clear-cut the old-growth forest, sowwwry"? Yeesh.
"You haven't convinced me," who gives a shit, man. Literally who gives a single shit. You don't have to be convinced of reality or decency for the rest of us to recognize reality and value decency. Your failure to be convinced is a point in favor of excluding you and ignoring you, not engaging you.
People who expect me to be calm, measured and understanding about their "nuanced" AI take are insufferable. They stole my life's work with the express purpose of ruining my career and leaving me destitute. Fuck you.
Thereβs No Good Reason for Carney to Privatize Canadaβs Airports
The plan would worsen labour conditions and make flying more expensive.

I read this again and again and I can't help but wonder why Canada and the EU expressing a desire for autonomy and self-determination is so *shocking*.
What did you *expect*?
Just had the thought that effective altruism and evolutionary psychology are functionally chronological mirrors, in that each confects fantasies over states across the passage of time to justify whatever thing the person wants to be true in the present, just with opposite arrows of causality.
Lots of people in the world have Main Character Syndrome, it's a pretty human foible, but by god is it endemic in the US. And not just Trump supporters, either.
Americans stop taking it as a personal insult when other countries seek partnerships with countries besides the USA challenge, difficult level: impossible
Holy shit. All of the submission videos are just being uploaded immediately at the bottom of the webpage without any moderation whatsoever. Somebody is getting fired for this. openforlegends.guitarcenter.com/campaign/ope...
Pretty much every Carney policy has come from left field, justified not by careful study or enacting long-discussed plans, but by his assertion that heβs the Smartest Man in the Room and if we donβt do exactly what he says right now, the Americans will get us.
There are any number of reasons to question each of Carneyβs policies. But it might help to go to the root of the problem: Mark Carney is pre-empting an actual discussion of what kind of Canada Canadians want to build. This is not how our liberal democracy is supposed to work.
1. In late Sept. 2002 just a year after the Al-Qaeda led Sept. 11th attacks on the US & in the midst of the so called War on Terror that followed #9/11, #MaherArar, a Syrian-born-McGill University-educated engineer, was on his way home to Canada following a family trip to Tunisia.
John A. MacDonald was the first Prime Minister of Canada. In that role, he took bribes from business men for the railroad, executed Louis Riel, imposed the Chinese head tax which limited the ability for Chinese people to immigrate to Canada after they completed work on the railroad, and
If that candidate had gone up on stage and said the n-word you'd call for him to step down immediately, you wouldn't be lecturing Black people to suck it up and vote for the "lesser of too evils." The difference is which bigotry you find acceptable.
Agreed. But thatβs where we are. So if the choice is your societal segregation or sitting out knowing if enough people also sit out, youβll get death camps, youβd still do it? And Iβm not using you in an accusatory way, more the general you.
So π, predictably, is having a tantrum and threatening an EO to rename Lake Ontario. The depressing part, for me, is that if he does Google (my former employer) will meekly cave and slap the name Trump wants on the map even for non-US users. I need to de-Googlify myself a lot more.
i swear to Christ if external events once again conspire to save Doug Ford's political career by letting him earn cred for doing the most basic shit I will lose my mind
That's why I generally vote for the furthest left candidate on my ballot - because I'm looking for the person who's gonna throw the least number of people under the bus.
And that's why I yell at whoever represents me whenever they throw anyone under the bus.
No one goes under the fucking bus.
The older I get, the more clear it is that all our safety and well-being is intertwined. The same forces pushing racism are targeting trans people and immiserating the disabled and extracting everything they can from all of us. We gotta stand up for everyone because everyone is all of us.
My reply mentioned the bike lanes, the Ferris wheel, the tunnel, the island airport, the Greenbelt, the 413, the cuts to firefighters, the cuts to teachers, the cuts to healthcare, breaking the Beer Store contract, the hotel expenses, and the trip to spy on Bonnie Crombie and it's still incomplete.
A very polite Google recruiter just asked me over email if I wanted to apply to a Google Cloud position at my old office (at one level higher then I was when I left, no less) and while that's gratifying I admit surprise; I would have thought a recruiter would have read my LinkedIn posts.
I also left a note on the Google "epitaphs" site when I left which sadly I no longer have access to, but I assume a recruiter would, and the message I left was definitely not "excited for my next opportunity". And I made a point of outlining my ethical objections on my exit forms as well.
I didn't exactly burn bridges and salt the earth when I left, but I did everything I politely could to make it clear why I was leaving. Not loudly enough, I guess?
I've decided to compile a definitive thread of photos of the best sheep I've photographed during my walks in the countryside, together with supporting biographical information.
I will put the vital story associated with each sheep in the alt text, since some of it is a little long to fit in a post.
Australiaβs eSafety commissioner buried a report (released Friday afternoon) that shows the under 16 social media ban didnβt tangibly reduce teen social media use, and also resulted in parents tuning out of kids usage.

Metrolinx pleads guilty to dumping diesel fuel in Lake Simcoe - Metrolinx has been fined by the Provincial Court in Barrie for illegally discharging fuel in Lake Simcoe.
if an elite lobbying effort can convince you that you have to ban trans people from sports to survive in politics you straightforwardly do not have it in you to pass electoral reform, or stand up to the fossil fuel lobby, or do any of the difficult things that have to be done
Today's utterly random thought: there are three works of fiction where my suspension of disbelief has been utterly derailed by what amounts to a math error.
Blue Bottle Games, as a policy, does not use generative AI.
It's something we've discussed as a team, weighing the pros and cons, and ultimately, we decided it was not for us.
Recently, while chatting with a colleague, she mentioned it was useful hearing our reasoning.
So: Sharing time!

Every summer, the university of Waterloo puts the top five floors of Dana Porter Arts Library into storage, as there is insufficient demand to justify a ten story building.
The edifice is on casters, and is rotated 90 degrees once per term to spread out sunlight damage to the books.
It's safe to assume that all major LLMs are scraping Bluesky data to train future models.
As an open protocol, Bluesky is one of the few sources of fresh human-generated content that anybody can gobble up. So all this is probably going in the models.
There are submarines in the Great Lakes.
