i'd vote for that. sounds refreshing

Thomas A. Fine@thomasafine.bsky.social

Imagine if I, as a politician, made a statement on 9/11 in which 70% of my statement was describing how American hegemony and the suffering in the middle east was the important takeaway from that event. That's what Mamdani did in his statement recognizing October 7th.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

I'm not sure who saw this coming, but so far nearly all the jobs created during the second Trump administration have gone to women.

JCO for the win.

if Eliezer Yudkowsky was born into a somewhat poorer family and missed a couple lucky breaks, he’d have ended up as an archetypal specimen of your friend’s older cousin who keeps boa constrictors and makes you listen to him talk about quantum physics in his parent’s basement in exchange for weed

Carney is truly the Reagan of Canada. A calming, paternalistic figure in a period of apocalyptic uncertainty who galvanizes the economy with short-sighted right wing fiscal policies. And like Reagan, every disaster that Canada encounters in the future will be traceable to his administration.

“If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’” crazy how much Mamdani speaks my language

Darkly funny how the "USAID is CIA" is the exact mirror image of "UNRWA is Hamas"

ryan cooper@ryanlcooper.com

USAID was a free space for tankie and tankie adjacent dingbats to score edgy contrarian points by wildly exaggerating how imperialist it was, confident in the belief that it wouldn’t just disappear, except now it has and everyone is uncomfortably looking elsewhere

It doesn't even work well to find cancer before doctors. The pitch AI radiology companies make is with the most obvious mistakes possible and radiologists don't find it that useful as they either over-rely on it or don't rely on it at all.

Scaling back military exercises is a rational decision that Trump has arrived at for the wrong reasons so of course liberals are going into right-winger mode and sounding like birchers.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump allies himself w/Kim Jong Un against South Korea: “Based on my very good relationship w/Kim Jong Un, I am not happy that the US has agreed to Joint Military Exercises…I recently asked the President of SK if they would like to join us in the Denuclearization of Iran, & they said, ‘No thanks!’”

Some people have memories longer than a goldfish. The employees demanded that the magazine be owned by them with him as an equal and he declined. They weren't collective bargaining or organizing and demanding that someone step down as a leader is not something to be taken lightly.

Asher HELLbein@asherelbein.bsky.social

The thing you have to understand about Nathan J. Robinson is that he union-busted his own leftist magazine, an action so inherently delegitimizing for an ostensible socialist that he can be safely ignored on any subject he turns his overwrought, barely-edited pen toward

See also the term "activist scholar," which is applied derogatorily to academics who use their expertise to advocate for Left-leaning policy, but not to Right-leaning academics, even if they take money from Right-wing groups or advocate for Right-wing causes based on dubious evidence or none at all.

Hey remember when Korean right-wingers were worshipping THAAD and claiming that the US would protect Korea?

FinTwitter@fintwitter.bsky.social

THE U.S. HAS DEPLETED NEARLY 80% OF ITS THAAD INTERCEPTORS, ABOUT HALF OF ITS PATRIOT MISSILES AND SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS OF OTHER PRECISION MUNITIONS DURING THE IRAN CONFLICT, PROMPTING SENIOR MILITARY COMMANDERS TO WARN THAT KEY STOCKPILES ARE DANGEROUSLY LOW. - CNN

The modern era is full of the bizarre argumentative phenomenon of aggressive fragility. Instead of puffing oneself up as strong, one posits oneself as glass-doll weak, such that any opposition (any talk one dislikes existing) is to be seen as unethical attack. Literally pathetic.

“Stalinist and tacti-cool” just reminds me of Turing Police’s tweet describing being an ML as wanting the police to drive an MRAP through your boss’s house to arrest them for wage-theft lol

I think it's healthy for people on Blueksky remember that the people who run the editorial offices of most of the prestige media and commentary outlets in the country hate 🫵YOU🫵 in particular more than anything else.

Waiting to hear back about two job applications and I hate how the notification comes on every device. I feel nervous and like I should be ready for an application at anytime no matter what I’m doing or how I’m feeling.

I seriously think that my boss has AI psychosis. His entire management style is just to tell employees to use AI and he puts massive contracts into AI instead of reviewing them. One of my co-workers failed their probation and got fired because he didn’t train her and she made a mistake.

One thing that we’ve learned over and over again in the last like 5-10 years is that politicians and leaders are no more resistant to online brain worms than the average person, yet nobody’s really sure what we can do to prevent it. I’ve read troubling things about Putin as well.

This sums up the frantic and coerced deployment of "AI" throughout public and private sectors. Results of even cursory audits are horrifying every time, invariably paired with forced adoption and retaliation for asserting professional norms. Colonialism is a cherry on top.

Mayo Clinic’s former director of research operations alleges she was sidelined, then terminated, for raising objections over lax standards of studies involving AI.

There is no complete theory of our current moment without understanding that the most dangerous form of being Extremely Online is expressed by our elites. It's not the kids on their phones, its their congressional representatives and the Atlantic columnists complaining about kids on their phones.

Social media polarization is not, imo, a story of the masses becoming radicalized: it is a story of elites becoming radicalized, and that trickling down.

When you think of it, civility is puritanical and harmful bullshit which never should have been invented and any proper nihilist movement should seek to abolish it.
