A capital finds a technology to make its labour more productive than that of other capitals. It makes a surplus profit. The technology becomes the new norm across all capitals. Surplus profit disappears. Expanding scale now only way to make bigger profit. Next technology comes along. Rinse & repeat.

(It's the delta that worries me in the code I see. Engineers with a quarter century of experience churning out code by the bucketful that's quite a bit worse than what they used to write. So either they aren't reviewing their own code like they used to or their skills have degraded.)

We have canceled the pilot program. Every single person on this committee (all except me were pro AI when we started) has decided ChatGPT offers nothing of substance and now wants to set up a chatroom associated with our writing center manned by writing tutors instead

The same people warning about “sharia law” are the ones demanding live streamed executions, book bans, baring journalists from the White House, eroding women’s rights, rounding up people in our streets, and legislating the Bible in schools, all in the name of “Christianity.”

Since then, almost all advances in software engineering have been attempts to reduce the severity of that problem. Now we are seeing businessmen (and sadly, too many programmers) pushing a technology that makes things _worse_ rather than better.

Rather soon in the history of programming (the mid 1960s) it became apparent that programs could become large, complex, and hard to understand, and that dealing with the inability of human minds to _understand_ their programs is a central problem in _software engineering_.

One of the handful of articles telling it like it is instead of misinforming the public. By @saragoud.bsky.social for @thebulletin.org Yes. Its bad science based on numbers out of various behinds, but that's not how most of the rest of the media is discussing it. thebulletin.org/2026/09/how-...

thebulletin.orgHow the bad science of AI doomerism is good for big businessThere is no clear path showing that today’s AI systems will lead to superintelligence, much less a basis for calculating the probability of doom.

Some morning musings on AI. We need to stop talking about this as technology issue. It's an ethics & law enforcement issue. Thread:

Reading proofs from book & remembering what I wrote in 2015: "I am very concerned about the future of AI. Not because of the risk of rogue machines taking over. But because of the homogeneous, one-dimensional group of men who are currently involved in advancing the technology.”

Forget grandiose talk of curing cancer - this is what AI is actually doing to healthcare. In the words of one cardiologist: “it’s bots fighting bots, agents fighting agents, a horrible dystopic future nobody wants to live in.”

The WAR ON WALKING has taken many forms around the world. It’s often as simple as how we signal who space is and isn’t for. Once our eyes are opened to all the ways we’ve prioritized cars over people, we can’t unsee it. Frustrating photo contributed by @stadsplanering.bsky.social. #WarOnWalking

(For those that don't know. Lenat used his Eurisko AI to formulate a strategy for a naval wargame. It found an optimal strategy was to deliberately destroy some of it's own ships.)
