Thrilled to share our **OPEN ACCESS** paper on how raising Seattle's minimum wage affected households receiving SNAP benefits. When the minimum wage went up, SNAP benefit levels went down -- a little. But, increases to earnings more than offset SNAP losses.

a thing historians will marvel about when they study this era is the extent to which the "war is a thing that happens to poorer, browner people" class went about systematically dismantling every aspect of the global political order that confined the costs of war to poorer and browner people

the problem with the left handing democrats a loaded gun tonight to take back to the negotiating table is that they absolutely can not be trusted with a firearm.
Everyone employee deserves to work in a non-toxic respectful environment where they’re paid enough to enjoy their lives. That shouldn’t be a “perk” of a good company.
I interviewed Dr Amy Hagopian who is barred from attending the American Public Health Association meeting where she is scheduled to receive a lifetime achievement award.

McLaughlin: "Pritzker said there's racial profiling, which is absolutely false. Our officials use reasonable suspicion. That's protected under the US Constitution 4th Amendment."
Her expulsion and banning from the 2025 meetings is particularly ironic as another colleague reports that she was going to receive a lifetime achievement award at this conference. 5/n
As of 10/8/25, 500+ public health scholars and practitioners have signed a letter in support of due process for Hagopian - links to the letter and materials are in her statement.
As Prof. Hagopian argues, this "pattern of institutional capitulation matters."

Hagopian is a longtime APHA member, active in several sections including currently serving as the elected chair of the International Health section. 3/n
Amy was also the 2018 recipient of APHA's Victor Sidel and Barry Levy Award for Peace which recognize members who have made "outstanding contributions to preventing war and promot(ing) international peace." 4/n
Prof. Hagopian reports a process that included an anonymous complaint and a 40 minute zoom meeting, "with no written charges provided" then expulsion and banning from meetings "without investigation, witness interviews, or (an) appeal process."

Let me get this straight: Link, a Black user, got banned for calling out the Bluesky CEO for following a racist. That’s not a good look, especially given Bluesky’s historical treatment of Black users here on bluesky.
Hegseth: "It all starts with physical fitness and appearance. If the secretary of war can do regular hard PT, so can every member of our joint force. Frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations and see fat troops. Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals."
“'This tendency to fantasize—when times change and things aren’t what they were—that the poorest and most vulnerable are actually some sort of malicious freeloading class is a very old one,' medievalist @elisewang.bsky.social ... pointed out on Bluesky."
To many, the notion that the “able-bodied” must work sounds reasonable on its face. But in reality, work requirements don’t meaningfully boost employment.
And for people with invisible disabilities that can make work extremely challenging, the framework can unfairly cast them as lazy.
Old man going on the Sunday morning shows, looking lost, talking like he’s in a past that died decades ago, all while wearing a 100% Grover wool suit from the Sesame Street collection.
I have approximately zero following on this app, sharing in the hopes it can get in front of the right person. A man I went to college with’s wife was kidnapped by ICE at a green card hearing, and he’s trying to find a reporter who will speak to him about the situation
Recently a coworker gasped at hearing that I generally drink 8-10 shots of espresso a day. Lovely to learn that I can now refer to this as an evidence-based practice.

⚖️ HUGE day today in the NIH terminations cases
There's a trial (of sorts) at 10a ET in Boston today for arguments that NIH unlawfully terminated 100s of grants.
It's a 3 hour hearing and I'll post periodic updates.
Of note: this is the 1st lawsuit filed against the Trump Admin to go to trial.
