The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

Lula is to my left. Magyar is to my right. And I don’t care in the slightest, because they are the candidates of democracy against autocracy.

I was kindly invited to give the final plenary at this year's American Society of Bioethics & Humanities annual meeting—I discussed being a global health professor who engages in advocacy One thing I got asked is: should scientists or healthcare professionals remain politically neutral?

"This is performative" okay well the fascists are performing bigotry so let's have everybody use the time that has been given to them.

Yes, of course McDonald’s posting about National Coming Out Day is “performative.” Nobody thinks Ronald McDonald threw the first brick at Stonewall. Nonetheless, the biggest and most influential institutions in American life performing affirmation of LGBT social and civil equality is a good thing.

1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria. 2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae. 3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish. The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists following their curiosity, and this is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!

As a professional editor, my take is no matter how you use “comprise” half of your readers will think you are wrong, so just avoid it if possible.

Whenever people criticize the greed of the uber elite rich people of the world, their weird defenders act like if they gave away a fraction of their money they’d be destitute. But Dolly did, and she was still able to own a theme park.

I submit this is the most important story of the day. In 2017, a sailor told the President that the old steam carrier catapults were better than the new electric ones, probably in the same way your elderly neighbor says carburetors were better than these new fangled fuel injectors.

President Trump has directed the Navy to tear out a complex system for launching jet fighters from its aircraft carriers and instead go back to using steam catapults. 🔗: on.wsj.com/4i2qDD6

My buena malata is finally producing! This is actually a plant from last year that struggled. I overwintered it inside, battled its bug infestations, and now I have these lovely peppers! I also have 2 more of these plants started this year (along with many other peppers). 🌱

🧵 So my darlings, here's a little story about the importance of preventative health. Spoiler: I'm fine. I'm going to be just fine. I mean. Most likely. But one thing I know for absolutely certain, if I had delayed taking action by a year, or even six months, this would be a VASTLY different story.

Important: Trump’s executive order is NOT legislation. Though the executive order promotes more misinformation about vaccines, nothing has changed about the availability of childhood vaccines. For evidence-based guidance, please follow and share American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations.

Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong. Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚 What’s checked out on your card right now?

"The very existence of Rep. Rulli and Rep. Emmer – as Italian-American and German-American members of Congress – proves that the arguments of nativists are bankrupt to the core."

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

In recent weeks, congressmen like Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) and Rep. Michael Rulli (R-OH) have leveled racist attacks against immigrant communities in their districts. As I note in CAMPAIGN TRAILS, a century ago those same racist attacks were being made against people named Emmer and Rulli.

Good morning. Today is the LAST DAY to comment on the proposed OMB rule that will, honestly, destroy science in the US. And it will do FAR MORE THAN THAT. www.theverge.com/science/9576...

Goodness, Fox News and the NY Post? Could this be a sign of progress??

The reason the US has such a powerful science and innovation ecosystem is simple: decades of public investment (via largely independent agencies, including NIH and NSF). Basic science builds future cures over a timeline too long for the private sector. /3 www.infotimes.us/basic-scienc...

infotimes.usBasic Science Is The Foundation Of Future CuresInjecting partisan politics into American basic science would be terrible for the US: for the economy, and for development of future treatments for diseases like schizophrenia and Alzheimer's.

So important! This blog and its companion open.substack.com/pub/elizabet... are great guides to the rule, its effects, and how to respond. Please take action to oppose the rule!

Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social

I talk about the US Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) a fair amount, but information about RFK Jr. shutting them down doesn’t seem to grab people’s attention as much as posts about vaccines, for example. That needs to change, b/c the dismantling of USPSTF is an equal if not greater threat.

Agree. Lots of other interesting stuff in this article, too.

'staying out of the political fray to seem neutral is no longer a defense. In an era where scientific authority is being deliberately undermined, a refusal to take a position can become a form of complicity. As Holden puts it, when we fail to engage, “the enemy is sometimes us".' 🧪

164 years ago, on the 13th of May 1862, Robert Smalls escaped slavery by capturing the steamboat 'Planter' and steering it through Confederate lines. The US Navy commissioned it as the USS Planter and appointed Smalls as captain, making him the first black man to command a US ship. #otd #history 🗃️

Good reminder of the breadth and depth of the research enterprise in the US. May it continue to be so.

Quantian@quantian.bsky.social

Many people have a vested interest in pretending otherwise, but the US research university is globally dominant to an almost unbelievable degree. The typical state university is a football team stapled to a R&D lab with a budget bigger than the entire nation of Belgium.
