I would guess it's because of the structure of math research versus cancer research. With math, an AI can plug into Lean and get a result. With medical research, the AI would need an actual lab to do experiments. Ai is just well suited to do math due to the structure of math proofs.

This week’s main story is about how more and more white nationalists, antisemites, and Nazi sympathizers seem to be integrating into the Republican Party, how some of them are currently running for office, and how old you can be for JD Vance to consider you “a very young boy.”

Always surprising just how dumb Matt Yglesias is. Or maybe, maybe it's just surprising that anybody still listens to him.

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

Just walking around enough in downtown Minneapolis and it's just missing that "life" and the energy of people. We as a society just don't quite have it right.

🚨We analyzed 138 million geocoded property tax records to quantify how municipal boundaries spatially overlap onto economic segregation in every US metro area—creating disparities in localities’ ability to fund public goods. And we made an interactive map of our results! [1/16]

$625,000 is such a hilariously small number. It's exactly how you'd expect we'd let a great public service die. To put that amount in perspective, it's only twice what we spend to make sure Lisa Goodman has a job at city hall in recognition for her years of service as best friend to the mayor.

They started texting with a 16-year-old. After two years, they offered to sell him a gun. They consider that "stopping a terrorist attack." And they are calling it heroic. What an absolute embarrassment.

I'm grateful for the heroic work of law enforcement that prevented a mass shooting and terrorist attack at the Mall of America. This shows why we continue to need major coordinated investments in anti-terrorism and local law enforcement to stop attacks like these.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

One thing I don't think people are talking about is that her excuse is almost worse than admitting what she did. She is saying "I played being pervy to fit in with the cops", which I think is worse than just saying "yeah I'm a little pervy."

Curious especially to hear from the women & enbies On Here: are you included to give Mayor Her a big pass on being pervy because we live in a still-rampantly unequal society? www.startribune.com/full-kaohly-... (Gift link)

Maybe that's a bad take, idk. It's also pretty funny to write an opinion piece saying it's okay to be a perv because she's a woman. This is what the states biggest newsroom is here for.

This is the full chart, they do know how to make a pie chart. And they published this. In 2022, so I don't think it was an AI thing.

If anything the mayor who should resign is St Paul's. Frey isn't good and I don't like him, but it's regular old bad at your job not good, not did something so bad he should be forced out. St Paul's mayor on the other hand, probably (w/o me knowing all the details) crossed the resign threshold.

I really appreciate everyone’s passion over city politics, but Frey being removed or resigning over disagreement regarding the management of MPD is a theory that simply is not grounded in reality. (This is, for some reason, a theory that I have seen floating around.)

MPD still can’t answer questions about where all the money went. And now, Frey is directing them not to testify before the Council. What are they covering up? What don’t they want the public to know?

one week ago today, brian o’hara was in front of the minneapolis city council, unable to explain to aisha chughtai why the police department was $20 million over budget this year as she went through line item by line item. and now he’s resigned as the police chief

The Minneapolis Police Department's horseback police unit, the last in Minnesota, quietly disbanded after the department's barn lease expired last month. The mounted patrol unit's end follows years of attempted budget cuts by the City Council as some members questioned the expense.

I'm digging into some historical Freeway planning reports, and it is wild to see what people thought freeways would do before they built them. A study in Minneapolis 1957 said that freeways in Minneapolis would both immediately increase Minneapolis property values and might stop suburbanization.

And: "Since Suburbanization is actually in process in Minneapolis at a time when no freeway system exists, it might be more proper to ask if there are not ways in which the projected system may help to avoid undue movement of people and enterprises out of the city into the suburbs."
