Say hello to #Cornwall Council's Dragonfly Squad! A Cormac Environment team has come up with a rather unusual way to keep biting insects at bay - dragonfly hats. Operative Harry Blake had the idea, and the team reckons the decoys have worked a treat, with no need for insect repellent.

Cornwall’s newest electric buses will soon be taking over the Truro Park and Ride service. Get a sneak peek tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8, when the Transport for #Cornwall team will be at Lemon Quay in #Truro from 9.30am to 3pm to answer your questions about buses.

Every so often at work, a well meaning user suggests using what3words and I gently explain why we'd never consider it. And that's just little old me, how did Network Rail get in so deep with them? A similar pros/cons from 2 mins of research would give you some pause.

Gareth Dennis@garethdennis.uk

This is a railway access point. There are more than 35,000 of them in Britain, each one enabling inspection, maintenance, repair and, sometimes, emergency response. Since 2020 though, a potentially fatal flaw has been creeping across the network, and it needs to be reversed.

If you can see the sun this evening you can watch the solar eclipse... ie. There's no special location you have to be in (you don't need to climb on top of a mountain, or drive a few hundred miles to the coast, as some seem to suggest!) 🌞🌑

Blackout warnings in Hungary, triggered by an outage on a gas plant and the shutdown of a nuclear plant due to low water levels. Damn that intermittent power…

Short-sighted, stupid cuts to the UKRI budget include shutting down Jodrell Bank, the icon of British astronomy. (Many other cuts too, including 20% to our brand new @vrubinobs.bsky.social). Interesting politically to shut down a major facility in...um..Manchester 🔭 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

When the story of why humanity didn't stop climate change is written, it will feature front pages like this. Even as the skies blacken with climate change-induced wildfires, right wing media continue their relentless crusade against measures to tackle it.

So the efficacy of AI currently relies on the 5% (or less) of archives that have been digitised being the good 5% As for creativity (the groundbreaking type), pretty sure that still requires original thought and can’t be conceived from what has gone before then summarily and illicitly pinched

Amalia S. Levi, PhD@amaliasl.bsky.social

📢 Once more for the people in the back: - Most [more than 95%] of archives have not been digitized. - Most of humanity's knowledge and memory is *not* reachable by LLMs. - Believing that AI can provid you with comprehensive, definitive, "intelligent" results is folly.

Under a Binface government, anyone who doesn’t accept human-made climate change as fact will be sent back to school, from Year 1 right the way to A Levels, to see if anything goes in the second time round. #VoteBinface

I recently read or heard someone say something like "if AI was so good, they wouldn't be shoving it down our throats at every turn to justify the effort going into it." Credit goes to the source I have now forgotten.

Those in the northern hemisphere mid-high latitudes who don't enjoy hot weather should be thankful that aphelion occurs during boreal summer. If we had perihelion instead, summers would be somewhat hotter (& winters a bit colder). Vice-versa for the southern hemisphere.

The Earth is coming up to #aphelion on July 6... that's the day the planet is the furthest away from the sun all year. ☀️ (We were closest to the sun back on January 3, and that point in our orbit is called perihelion.) [1/2]

AI slop has finally made it's way to energy… To be fair we reached that point a while ago but wow has it got bad lately. A particular favourite has to be this bizarrely-proportioned map of Britain that claims to show the TNUoS demand zones that "exactly align with the country's 14 DNO regions"

One of the more misogynistic takes currently trending in the AI policy space is "women use less AI than men because they have less tech literacy" Ok but have you considered that women use less AI than men because we have more tech literacy?

My @ubiquiti.bsky.social Dream Machine died today, weeks past 5 years old, makes me sad a £330 purchase is no longer with me 😢 Invoked DR & got Network restored to my CloudKey, stuck in an extra AP & switch in the office & dug out the ISP router & back in business, now what to replace it with!? 🤔

Working my ass off today with a bunch of volunteers. Just looked at my inbox to see if we got any new donors, and nope, we LOST one monthly subscriber. Warleigh Nature Reserve will bankrupt Protect Earth if we don’t get this crowdfunder. Get involved.

Another big weekend on Warleigh Nature Reserve guarding a few hundred trees and strimming trails for the ecology tours starting next week. Want a quick tour of what we’ve done so far? Feast your eyes on this.👇🏼 #rewilding #wetlandrestoration youtube.com/watch?v=9i4B...

Can I just ask, #r4today, as you seem to be very keen to talk about and investigate Polanski’s council tax issue, why not the same feverish scrutiny over the far more troubling and glaringly corrupt £5M bribe Farage took from that crypto billionaire, Harborne? We can hear your strings being pulled.

In a rational world the government would be asking people to respond to the current fossil fuel crisis by car sharing, turning lights off, and generally saving fuel and energy. And yet Ministers can’t even propose better efficiency standards for tumble dryers without the right wing press going mad.

Artemis 2 was the furthest human voyage from Earth. Per the final JPL Horizons trajectory I estimate the max distance from the geocenter was 413145 km at 2304 UTC Apr 6 (about 4 km less and 1 min later than PAO's report at the time). (1 / n ).....

Ah fuck the internet tells me it’s International Beaver Day and @protect.earth can’t afford a massive heap of marketing folks with silly themed calendars to post regularly scheduled content for every bloody thing like that but here’s a thing I wrote about beavers recently.

Beavers dont kill trees, they coppice them. Here are two trees that have been beavered at Bathampton Meadows (just down the river from Warleigh Nature Reserve) that people have been worried were “killed” that are both still growing happily. Let’s talk about it.
