I got a Steam Deck at the end of 2023 and it‘s one of the best things I‘ve bought. I’ve played more games in 2024 than the previous few years combined. So rather than list my top games of 2024 here’s a list of ALL the games I’ve played last year, almost all on the SD… 🧵

Stand by for a DATABLAST! Peeps who remember watching Bad Influence back in the 90s may also recall the Datablast at the end of each episode. If you had a fancy frame advance VCR, you could record it and then page through frame-by-frame a bonus magazine! Or read very, very fast! 😅 #VideoBytes

Happy "Microsoft trying to force CoPilot subs" day in the UK for all who celebrate. (They just pinged me my renewal notice with it carefully worded to sound like a compulsory general price increase). 1) Go to your account page 2) Hit cancel 3) Change sub back.

Bullseye! Researchers using Hubble found a massive galaxy rippling with nine star-filled rings after an “arrow,” the blue dwarf galaxy to its center-left, plunged through its core 50 million years ago. A thin trail of gas still links the pair: bit.ly/4hcX52n 🔭 🧪

This is a great read

I'm going to get a jump on this by sharing this gift link to my bit about what I saw at the Consumer Electronics Show, what I learned from the Tesla Hyperloop, and the dumb, dull, demeaning future big tech types want the rest of us to settle for: defector.com/the-future-i...

Horrendous day. I have no idea what's going to happen yet, but if any of my game-dev peers have open roles (listed or upcoming), please do share them. There's so much incredible talent across Leamington and Reflections #ubisoft

Here’s the researcher who studied rats driving cars. Long after they were very familiar with the cars and how they worked, the rats would use the cars even when they’re weren’t necessary to get to a treat. theconversation.com/im-a-neurosc...

In 2014 Dutch scientists left a hamster wheel outside, to see if wild animals would use it like their domesticated counterparts. The answer: hell yes! 734 visits from wild mice - plus rats, shrews, slugs ("running" being subjective here) & even frogs and snails. The apparent reason: fun. Just fun.

A game I once worked on was getting poor test scores towards the end of the main campaign. The wisdom from above was that the game should be progressively harder so the last few levels were the toughest. I made the last 90 minutes easier and the test scores shot up 🤷

I’ll never understand why game devs make the endings of their games so impossible. Who isn’t impressing? You’re giving all but the diest of die hard of your players a terrible final impression. Shogun Showdown is impossible in the last couple days. Have to exploit a cheat to have a shot.

A couple of reasons why I think this worked. After a long campaign players kind of get fatigued, they’ve started to see all there is to see and on some level they just want to get it over with and finish the story. You don’t want to make the end feel cheap but outstaying your welcome is also bad.

Making the end of the campaign easier also makes it flow better, as players aren’t dying and restarting as often. It gives it a more energetic pacing and helps the main story end with a bang. Again, you don’t want the last moments to drag as that’s what people will remember.

I feel like there’s something similar going on in games, except the dominant phrase is “the data says this genre of game will find a market” instead of “this is fun, people might like this”

Joel Morris@gralefrit.bsky.social

The current clunky impasse in creative programme making is down to trying to replace that gut feeling trust in “your people” that leads to confident risk-taking, with “these people are famous” or “this is an old thing that worked before” or other random acts of magical thinking.

It seems like a small W but it’s one that will improve lives. Still more to do but it will make renting in the UK suck slightly less.

If NASA failed at this rate there would be protests to cut the budget..... Failure in science and engineering is inevitable, but the private tech approach of "move fast and break things" (not to quote the berg) has very questionable ethics given the resources required for space faring. 🔭🧪🚀

Judging by user reviews, the average Steam user believes that an Early Access game should be fully complete and stable, while complete and stable games should be constantly updating and adding new experimental features. I think something has gone wrong here.
